Every flight has a callsign that's used with air traffic control, and for commercial aircraft, that's generally going to be the generic airline callsign plus the flight number. Callsigns are of course unique to a particular flight, because that's the way that air traffic control communicates with pilots.
That brings us to what happened very late last night (Thursday, August 13, 2026), in Phoenix. AA2482 is a flight number used by American between Chicago (ORD) and Phoenix (PHX). The flight number is actually used in both directions of travel, which isn't that uncommon, with both flights being operated by Boeing 737-800s.
However, things got a little strange last night, because it's not necessarily the same plane that flies in both directions (since American has many 737s in Phoenix that it can swap around). Last night:
AA2482 from Chicago to Phoenix landed at 12:13AM, well behind the scheduled 10:43PM arrival
AA2482 from Phoenix to Chicago took off at 11:58PM, roughly on-time, given its scheduled 11:45PM departure
What happened is that both planes ended up on the same Phoenix air traffic control frequency at the same time, with the same callsign.

Tower: “AA2482 make immediate right turn for noise abatement.”
AA2482: “We’re at 30,000 feet, how can we possibly need to turn for noise abatement?””
Tower: “Did you ever hear the noise two jets make when they collide? “
Does anyone think AI could have handled this situation better than the ingenuity of the flight controller??? Kudos to the entire group of professionals involved.

This is a weird one. I can understand why they use “flight number” rather than the individual aircraft’s “tail number” ... And sort of understand why the same flight number in both directions, although that makes less sense.
Wouldn’t AA1234 in one direction and AA1235 in the other make more sense? That would seem to uniquely define each flight.
Or maybe it just isn’t a real problem?
Not necessary for the plot but they had to get Boeing in there somehow.
I certainly hope this incident is going to be investigated and some group of heads will be rolling. This is a mammoth sort of blunder. If it hadn’t been so potentially dangerous, it would be falling off the chair funny.
Will be interesting to see what Captain Steeeve says about this.
Flew for a major airline, we always changed flt #s based on rotation, for example a flight from JFK to LAX would be 3405, the return would be 3406

You raise an interesting point. The tail number seems to be a good idea.
That's what we do in General Aviation, but I believe it would work badly in commercial. In GA, we're doing more or less whatever we want to. In commercial, many aircraft fly a particular route ... the route number says more about what's going on than the tail number.
When Pan Am instituted service between New York and San Francisco the long way around, they were smart enough to label the westbound flight from San Francisco as flight 001, and the eastbound service from New York as flight 002 so they would have different numbers if they met up in Thailand or India.
American apparently lacks a single executive with common sense that was common about 80 years ago.
Delta at least inherited the common sense; Delta flight 1 flies New York to London, and flight 2 is from London to New York. (Delta acquired much of Pan Am’s transAtlantic route structure).
General aviation has used “tail number” which are FAA-issued N-number callsigns and no two are alike. This is just a company-issued flight number made up by the airline.

Flew recently on a JetBlue flight, they did exactly as you suggested.
