Popocatepetl volcano is just east of Mexico city and is the 5th highest peak in North America ( 17,694 feet (5,393 meters) tall.)
It is erupting steam right now. You can slide the time backward to see the last 12 hours. This mountain is where I did my first technical climb following the "Ventorillo Route" up the inactive vent on the right hand skyline, across the saddle and up the glacier to the summit.

At night you can see the glow from the magma in the crater. It has erupted lava off and on for many years. I think I climbed it in 1992 and it started erupting shortly after that.....and the peak has been closed to climbers ever since. I missed the new active phase by “this much”.
Meanwhile, on Sicily, Mt Aetna is exhibiting a major eruption.

That was the case when I was there in 1999 too.
Even Krakatoa is becoming active.

My fourth grade teacher told us the fascinating story of how Paracutin grew from a corn field. I think that was 1943. We studied El Popo at that time too. She and her husband had a Piper something that they would fly as far as Colombia during the summer season. Quite an adventure she brought to the fourth grade geography classroom. Yes, we had geography all of fourth grade for one period a day. It was wonderful.

Etna also, and others. I wonder if it is because of the ‘once in 100 years’ planetary alignment?
