Shake Shack has responded to a viral video showing customers who declined to tip were charged more for their order.
The fast food chain spoke out after patron BD Powell shared a video showing the outrageous situation at one of Shake Shack's locations at a Salt Lake City airport.
The clip showed how the total cost of Powell's order jumped by $1.50 after he refused to add a tip.
The video quickly went viral after it was posted on TikTok on Saturday, clocking up more than four million views and thousands of furious comments.
Shake Shack spokesman Corey Gee has since told the Daily Mail that the incident was the result of an error within the kiosk technology at a licensee's restaurant.
'It is not Shake Shack policy, nor that of our licensees, to increase the price of menu items when no tip is added,' Gee said.
'The pricing issue shared online occurred at an airport Shack that is owned and operated by our licensee HMSHost. HMSHost investigated the matter and determined it was an error within their kiosk technology unrelated to tipping.'
The spokesman said the issue has been resolved and that Shake Shack will continue working to make sure every guest is taken care of.

Nothing at shake shack deserves tipping.

Hey, Vinny, Guido says there’s some deadbeat out there who won’t tip. We tried to explain it all reasonable like, but he ain’t getting the message. Hows about you go take care of him, capisce?
I am starting to bring my own food to venues where I might need a bite to eat. Or make sure I am decently fed before going to the venue. Food served at the venues tend to be low quality and high priced.
A real error would sometimes add, and sometimes subtract.

This is a bigger issue. Just about every fast food business now had you pay on a screen that requires you to first decide on a tip. Sometimes the choices start at very high percentages.
Maybe the employees get the money, but this is resulting in people paying a fortune on tips for workers we never tipped before.
And many states now have extremely high minimum wages for all workers.
Chik Fil A seems to be an exception.
Sure, just like greasy touchscreen voting machines always error on the side of the Demonrats. Using your own phone or tablet to order at restaurants should be thing. Who wants to touch with their eating fingers something 1,000 filthy Demonrats touched?

Looked it up because some places don’t tax food.
Prepared Food: Hot foods, restaurant meals, and food sold for immediate consumption are taxed at the full combined state and local sales tax rate, which typically ranges from roughly 6.85% to 9% or higher depending on the city. Restaurants also add a local 1% restaurant tax.

No pricing error at all. Just plain old vindictiveness. SS should sue the franchise holder to the ground. Somebody made a really really bad decision for a buck fifty.
I only saw this request for a tip at a fast food restaurant (where is the service you are provided, besides being handed a bag or a tray?) that recently opened near my home. It featured greasy chicken and all manner of fried food. Won't be going there again.
