I bought a package of boneless chicken breasts from Kroger with a label weight of 4.94lb at $2.28/lb, or $11.26 total. When I got home, I weight the package, which includes the packaging and diaper, and it weight 3.84lb, more than a pound under weight including the packaging. I took it back for a refund and this is where it gets interesting.
The service manager, who was very nice to me, said that she couldn't take the package back because it left the store and asked what I was willing to take to keep the package. She then offered to refund me $8, which I accepted. So I got 3.84lb of chicken breast for $1.04/lb. Even more interesting, I said: "You need to tell the people in the meat department about this." She said: "Truthfully, we've been having some problems with them weighing the meat."
Moral: Weigh you meat to make sure you're getting what you paid for, or buy it at the counter.

And bring the scale to the store, I guess. We have a low-profile glass one, that I suppose could be brought.
I wonder, also, if this started during the Deep State/Biden regime. Biden castigated stores to hide his inflation, maybe this was one way they could.
I’ve seen postings about this happening at Walmart. Folks check the package weight on the produce scales.
This is a problem all over. Here in Florida, the scales are checked by the State Department of Agriculture.......
At some supermarkets here, there’s nobody at the meat counter anymore. (They’re doing away with attendants at the deli section in some stores, too. Everything is already cut and packaged.)
We would sometimes buy a whole chicken and ask the butcher to cut it up for us - but it’s been ages since we’ve even seen a whole chicken in our nearest store.
At Fry’s (Kroger), wait until the deli meat is marked-down more than 70% about 2-3 days before the Sell By date. Haven’t got sick once. Probably keep us both alive.

We live within two blocks' distance from a Kroger, and practically all the meat we buy there, except for special occasions, is in the reduced price section. Same experience as yours.
It’s bad in the Kroger produce section, too. They claim peaches or nectarines are on sale (for example), but when you place the produce code in at check out, the full non-sale price shows up. They do this all the time.

Maybe stores are now allowed to use “equatorial” or “polar” pounds? Sounds like something Biden would invent.
Anyone else old enough to remember when local news affiliates used to run stings on stuff like this, consumer related stories that caught grocery stores rigging weights, car repair shops screwing their customers, etc.
I can’t recall the last time I came across a local news station doing reporting like that.
Mamdani had better rush the building and opening of his government discount stores. The downtrodden workers are crying out for him to stop the capitalist gouging. /S
Wonder what the return policy will be for taking items to the socialist employees.
I had a short fat gal ring up four bananas for $9 once. I was all, woh woh hold on, stand over there and reweigh those. Her arms were so short she couldn’t reach the screen and had to lean in and put her gut on the scale to hit the buttons.
Saw a video where some guy on X or Tik Tok would weight items and post it online to show the shortages. One big violator was Domino sugar and they corrected it and the guy went back and some the bags were over weight after this at least shortly after this went viral.
Tell weights and measures about “their problem”
Weights on meats in supermarkets is one item they'll chase after. A previous coworker of mine worked for a county Weights & Measures team and he fined stores for it often. He very rarely had repeat offenders.

Today I bought 3 whole rotisserie lemon pepper chickens at WalMart marked down for $2.02 each. I put them directly in the freezer.
