North Koreans encouraged to eat ‘nutritious’ dog-meat soup during sweltering summer heat

North Korea has been grappling with record heat this week, prompting officials to recommend dog-meat soup as a way to cool off.

State media promoted the concotion as a traditional summer health remedy as Pyongyang reached a sweltering 98 degrees Thursday, the highest recorded temperature since the capital city began tracking the weather.

Ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun published a health feature on Aug. 2 where a Pyongyang General Hospital doctor recommended a myriad of “nutritious foods” to help North Koreans stay cool — including watermelon, cucumbers, fish porridge and mung beans.

The newspaper, which devoted an entire separate feature to the local dish, described dog-meat soup as a traditional summer health tonic that can help people cope with the sizzling heat.

“Even if dog-meat soup spills on the top of your food during the dog days of summer, it becomes medicine,” the newspaper wrote, reviving an old Korean proverb.

Euphemistically known as “dangogi,” or sweet meat, North and South Koreans have long believed dog meat to be a stamina food, typically eaten during the hottest days of the year.

“OK, so now I know where “hot dogs” come from. They probably ran out of rats. Poor pooches.”

Reminds me of an old joke. Some Italian Nuns were visiting NYC, with Mother Superior leading them. The came upon a hot dog stand and Mother Superior decided they should get into the culture and try some. One nun opened her bun and took a peek - then said, “Oh, Mother, what part of the dog did you get?”

They may already have some worthy candidates for this program, too. I can think of one or two that by their absence might improve a lot of things for N. Korea.

Dogs there are expected to be useful. So many/most? might be ratters. Rat chasers. So when they finally eat the fattened up dog, they are eating rat meat to a large extent.

They probably ran out of rats, then since the cats didn’t have any rats to eat, they ate the cats, and now it’s cuts of Cujo.

Only a matter of time before they start making them eat “Soylent Green”.

Dogs are food in many cultures.

Chili spicing is/was “formulated” to disguise the flavor of meats of questionable origin and freashness.

Think BBQ sauce over roadkill.

In that general part of the world -- including countries that are more prosperous and more free -- dog meat isn't a starvation ration.

They are not eating pets here, they are eating small game.

--- "Reminds me of an old joke. Some Italian Nuns ...."

Love that joke!

Fascinating how news stories are so often intended for other than simple news. Here's the South Korean version from a couple of years back.

"South Korea's parliament passed a bill on Tuesday to ban the eating and selling of dog meat, a move that will end the controversial centuries-old practice amid growing support for animal welfare.

"Eating dog meat was once seen as a way to improve stamina in the humid Korean summer. But the practise has become rare - largely limited to some older people and specific restaurants - as more Koreans consider dogs as family pets and as criticism of how the dogs are slaughtered has grown." more....

Here's a British version from a few years earlier, with a joke worthy of being revisited.

" Better wrap up warm, stockpile food and remember there is a surprising amount of food in the average household pet."

Loved the NY Post remark: "Euphemistically known as “dangogi,” or sweet meat, North and South Koreans have long believed dog meat to be a stamina food, typically eaten during the hottest days of the year."

The author of the article, Ella Morrison, followed up one a day later with a delightful version of " ‘miserable’ experience of contracting ‘explosive diarrhea’ parasite." In Tennessee, because that's not NYC. Citing a TikTok influencer.

As to the Italian version, someone had dolled up the story to give a name to one of the nuns -- Sister Mary May-I.

We should round up 20 female feral hogs and two males and release them on the Korean Peninsula.

Just because
