Enough speculation has swirled about Ford’s forthcoming small all-electric pickup truck to fill the bed of an F-350 Super Duty. Today, the Blue Oval lightens that payload somewhat by officially announcing the new EV truck’s name and starting price, while confirming additional tech and capabilities.

“Ranchero” had been our guess at the truck’s title, but instead, an entirely new nameplate will be introduced. So here it is: Ford Fathom.
That aligns with the alliterative nomenclature Ford has used in the past with vehicles such as the Fusion, Focus, and Flex. There’s punny meaning behind the name, too. Ford said that in developing the truck it “reached a new depth of innovation, allowing the company to fathom possibilities once thought beyond reach.”
On learning the name, several MotorTrend staffers expressed their bewilderment with Ford’s choice, potentially portending a wider public reaction. But Fathom is official, and will designate what might be the most disruptive Ford since the F-150 Lightning.
Shallow Pockets? Here’s Your Truck
Perhaps any consternation around the name will fade when considering the starting price. The Fathom will begin at $29,945 ($28,350 plus a $1,595 destination fee).
That pricing is with the standard-range lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery, which is of an unknown size. Ford confirmed that it will offer a larger pack, extending driving range for extra cost. The entry-level Fathom will be rear-wheel drive, propelled by a permanent-magnet motor designed and built by Ford. An all-wheel-drive setup that adds an induction motor to the front axle will also be available.
This sub-$30,000 starting price demonstrates Ford’s obsession with manufacturing efficiency in developing the Universal Electric Vehicle Platform that underpins the Fathom and other future EVs. For example, the architecture uses large aluminum unicastings to incorporate more than 100 parts that would otherwise be separate, which simultaneously reduces the amount of fasteners used. Rather than a distinct floor component, the Fathom’s interior parts mount directly to the top of the structural battery.

For comparison, the Fathom’s $29,495 base price makes it roughly $20,000 less expensive than the cheapest versions of the F-150 Lightning in its final year of production. It’s barely more expensive than the 2026 Ford Maverick, which starts at $29,685 for the XL trim with front-wheel drive and no options. A potential rival is the Slate Truck, which starts at just $26,400—but that might be a weaker value given the Fathom’s features.
Self-Driving Capable
Power windows will presumably be standard in the Fathom, which will be built in a four-door crew cab configuration. In that cab, Ford targets more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4. The Fathom’s bed length is unknown but is probably similar to that of the Maverick, while an under-hood frunk will add additional capacity.
Ford said the Fathom's standard features will include a “large” infotainment touchscreen, built-in Apple Maps navigation, bidirectional power capability, and an app-based digital key. Every Fathom will be compatible with BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free driving technology, which will likely be offered on a subscription basis.
Model T 2.0?
Ford’s EVs so far have been tepidly received. Although the Mustang Mach-E has sold decently, its name association with Ford’s beloved pony car may have been misguided. Despite massive investment in the F-150 Lightning, that pioneering electric pickup clashed with traditional truck values, and Ford, er, pulled the plug after 2025 while announcing it’ll re-engineer the Lightning to be a range-extender hybrid.

With this context, Ford is betting big on the Fathom and Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. Company CEO Jim Farley has called it a “Model T moment,” implying the revolutionary potential Ford sees in its forthcoming affordable EV models. The truck we now know as the Fathom will be the first of those when it rolls off the retooled line at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, likely for model year 2028.

Forgetting for the moment the arguments about whether or not this truck makes sense, they should have named it Ranchero. It’s a name that has some connection to Ford’s heritage. What marketing genius came up with the name “Fathom?”

The opportunity for the skilled is to buy one at salvage due to a damaged or bad bad battery system. Then install a Toyota Engine and drive train.
Its called Fathom because no one can fathom how much they will lose on trying to produce and sell it.

At that point I may just not use the EV for long trips. If the battery's range is cut in half, it's still fine for daily use. And if by then our old pickup has been replaced and we do most of our trips in the pickup because it'd be the newer, more comfortable vehicle, there'll be no need to replace the EV battery (as long as the range is fine for a day of local driving). As it is now we use the EV car for most long trips because it's the newer and more comfortable car we own. That's because most of our trips have plenty of fast chargers (done in 15 minutes) and we don't take trips up north when it's cold (slow charging). The few times we go on trips not good for the EV, we take the gas pickup.
By my project engineering math, which I recalculate every month after I get a power bill, in which I record the odometer of the EV and calculate that month's miles driven, and calculate what I would have spent on gas if I had replaced my wife's old gas crossover with another gas crossover instead of an EV crossover...the breakeven year is 2032. Which will be 10 years of owning the EV. That is the breakeven point for the entire energy project: what was spent in year 2021 on a small solar system to play with it for a year to be sure it'd work for our habits, what was spent on the upgrades to the solar in year 2022, what was spent on the EV (beyond what would have been spent on a gas car) and installing the chargers, what was spent on converting two natural gas appliances to electric ones (high efficiency ones like a variable speed heat pump and a hybrid water heater), and what was spent on normal energy upgrades like adding insulation to the attic. All of that was paid for a by a loan (HELOC). I make payments to the loan each month and pay a small power bill (avg less than $80/month) instead of paying a high power bill and a natural gas bill and lots of gasoline. And I assume a 3% inflation rate YOY on energy prices, while assuming a 1.5% degradation rate on the solar and battery throughput (based on the warranties, though in 4-5 years I've yet to see a decline in performance on any of the equipment).
By that math, the breakeven will be in year 2032; the balance left on the loan will equal the total cash flow savings of the energy project. "Cash flow savings" means how much less I'm paying on energy even after paying the loan payments. As the loan balance goes down, the minimum payment goes down too, but I'm making a steady payment anyway. (My loan payment + power bill = what my year 2019 avg power bill + natural gas bill + gasoline expenses were, so it's like my energy budget is stuck in year 2019 instead of having to pay higher and higher energy costs.) What I calculate each month as what my energy costs would have been for my real world consumption (i.e. how many miles I drove that month at that month's gas prices, and how many kWh's my inverters say I consumed but didn't have to pull from the grid, at my power company's real price per kWh, etc.)
After year 2032, anything more I get from the energy project is icing on the cake. Even if the EV goes kaput at that point, I still save from the solar and better appliances.
Plus, the breakeven point is really earlier than year 2032. When I say "cash flow savings", that doesn't include the fact that it means more cash staying in mine and my wife's Roth IRAs growing tax free (instead of using the money to pay sky high energy costs).
But that's only if you like doing your own homework to make sure it's a good idea for your driving and energy consumption habits. For others it'd be a bad idea to do like I did.
Cayuse, Vaquero, caballo, caballero, gaucho, corral, palomino all would have been better that ‘Fathom’.................
If commuting like in the Ranger it would be better with two doors and a larger bed. If you have four doors you might have well have an SUV with rear seats that fold down so you can have longer storage space. There are enough small pickups with four doors with tiny beds in the marketplace IMHO. I would rather have a Slate with a non-turbo 4 or diesel.
Plenty of room in the pickup bed for a gas powered generator to charge the battery
“Self-Driving Capable”. I like that feature the most, just tell it where to go.
How about a bed long enough to carry 4x8 sheets of plywood or sheetrock and close the tailgate?..........
