U.S. general warns Pentagon he lacks sufficient forces to protect Israel

Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, the head of U.S. European Command, sent written notification to senior Pentagon officials saying that without another Navy destroyer he will be forced to choose defense of the United States “homeland” over that of Israel, said the officials, who like some others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the correspondence.

A U.S. defense official said Grynkewich’s notification appears consistent with past outreach to the Pentagon from the military’s top generals when they see certain risks that require Washington’s consideration. This can occur, the official said, as commanders compete for finite resources and weapons.

The Pentagon declined to comment. U.S. European Command did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in Washington could not be reached for comment.

The general’s warning comes at a tenuous moment in the five-month conflict, as near-daily attacks have resumed following the collapse of peace talks between Washington and Tehran and the operation’s intensity has drained U.S. supplies of key defensive weapons.

The Navy has been particularly taxed, as the Trump administration has directed a blockade of Iranian ports in response to Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The standoff has stymied the movement of Middle Eastern oil and other commodities through the narrow waterway, upending the global economy.

U.S. naval destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea have been employed as a part of Israel’s defense for many years. The vessels, equipped with powerful radar and armed with an array of missiles, have downed missiles aimed at Israel not only by Iran, but by Houthi militants in Yemen that are equipped by Tehran.

European Command is central to this mission, as it coordinates military operations in the Mediterranean. At the same time, its forces must remain ready for any Russian incursion into territory protected by...

We’ve already relocated radars used to monitor for ballistic missile threats from the Korean Peninsula to the Middle East to replace systems destroyed by Iran.

Do you think Pat Buchanan would rather use US destroyers to protect the U.S. or Israel?

So you think there is a chance of a ballistic missile threat from Iran?

Well they did try to hit Diego Garcia, so I would say "yes."

So you think crazy Kim Jong Un is going to nuclear missile us? He's not as insane as the Religious fanatics in Iran.

“I’m curious how many FReepers would elect to protect Israel over the United States if faced with the choice.

I’m curious as to how many Jew-haters we have now on Free Republic.

The right does not need to be associated with Jew-hatred. The left already calls us “Nazis”, even though “Nazi” means “national socialism.”

This story was obviously fabricated to feed into the Jew Hatred we are seeing all over the internet nowadays.”

The “socialist” part of the Nazi party was primarily Ernst Rohn’s Brownshirts. After the “Night of the Long Knives,” socialism was never part of any Nazi doctrine.

So why is he running his mouth “publicly “?

Why would you believe that? They’ve never done so before. Every military action by Israel has needed US backup.

I guess you don't remember them taking out that Syrian nuclear reactor.

but if you criticize Israel you are a Jew-hater.

The benefit of the doubt went out the window a long time ago on this one.

The criticism has been going on for too long and in an entirely one sided manner, so nowadays, all critics have exhausted all seemingly innocuous reasons for doing it.

It's like the "N-word." People are going to assume the worst if you use it.

The anonymous source is a damned liar.

It’s not possible for somebody that stupid, one who thinks a single DDG is needed for homeland protection.

What the general most probably said is he needed another DDG to maintain two on station in the eastern med. That would require 6 or 7 ships.

It spouts an opinion. You know what they say about opinions.

You are kidding, right? Such levels of ignorance about the Nazis should not be displayed on Free Republic. The Nazis were absolute Socialists. There is nothing about them that wasn't Socialist.

Their full name is "Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei."

"NAtional soZIalistische German Workers Party."

There is a book called "Leftism Revisited" which I urge you to read. It covers all socialist movements since the French Revolution, and it has several chapters on the Nazis. They absolutely believed in the collective. The only difference between them and the Communists is that they were an explicitly racist party, and believed people of other races had no business taking up room that Germans could use. Whereas, the Communists wanted every nation to be socialist, the Nazis wanted there to be only one Nation, and that was to be a German nation, and it would be Socialist.

If I understand the argument . . . if the U.S. sends one more destroyer to protect Israel, then Israel will be too strong to be harmed by their enemies.

But . . . seeing the destroyer redeployment, U.S. enemies (Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran individually or in combination) will sense U.S. homeland vulnerability and attack using either conventional or nuclear weapons.

This does not seem like a reasonable plan by our enemies.

Some people need to be beaten silly for expressing a stupid or deceitful one?

Yyyeahhh. I think God’s got that. ‘Course, God doesn’t have 30 years experience sitting behind a desk pushing papers.

This sounds like massive anti-Israel spin. I could understand saying that he would have to choose between protecting NG the homeland and "fighting Iran", but saying it is about "protecting Israel" screams that someone involved in this leak has an agenda. That being said....

The Navy really needs help. More ships, more sailors. That has been known for awhile.

This is a bullshiite article. Since when have we defended the nation with the best anti missile system in the world? In addition to stopping missiles, the Israelis could turn Iran into a mixture of glass parking lot and 1st century dirt roads. I don’t think there’s any truth to this agitprop, but if there was, the general is going to end up retiring soon.

Consider the source. The WaPO thinks itself qualified to direct military deployments.

And all the other nuclear countries in the world could take it as a greenlight to let 'er rip, since MAD no longer applies.

India and Pakistan come to mind.
