Authorities say the killings fit the definition of family annihilation, one of at least eight in the US this year

Authorities in Michigan have identified a man they say fatally shot his wife and six children on Friday in a mass murder that fits the definition of a family annihilation.

Citing autopsy results, the Ottawa county sheriff’s office said in a news release Monday that Kristopher Karolkiewicz; his wife, Amanda; and their six children, aged five to 15, all died of gunshot wounds before their bodies were found in their burning home in Grand Haven Township. The agency noted that Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot himself to death – and said the deaths of Amanda and the children were ruled homicides.

Furthermore, the sheriff’s office said that the fire at the home on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan was evidently set intentionally in multiple parts of the house after the killings, though officials were still investigating the blaze’s point of origin.

We know the lead paramedic for our local firehouse, he graduated school with one of our daughters, this has impacted our group of firefighters very hard. The dad was let go the job and kept it to himself. The wife found out the day he did this, per other family. Very sad.

I often read similar advice like: the woman should have left or divorced when the man started messing up.

What most don’t seem to realize is that if we do there are two problems:

1. There is the risk it will actually provoke the deadly behaviors or

2. The crazy partner will get partial custody and then mom will not be around to run interference on those weekends/ weeks/ months so dad can go crazy unobserved

A woman with minor children is in a devils dilemma it is quite awful. Then when the family annihilation or whatever takes place it’s her fault for not leaving.

Must have been really hard on the first responders to discover the children. Guy must have tied everything to that job and providing for his family but was probably leveraged out the wazoo and a marriage already on thin ice.

He could have just stepped back and reassessed but once he failed to tell his family he just kept digging deeper. Really sad.
