Mamdani officials admit NYC-owned markets won’t have features like butchers, hot food — as critics rail plan is ‘destined for failure’

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Economic Development Corporation admitted this week that his city-owned grocery stores “might not have all the items” you’d find in a typical supermarket.

The five stores — which are expected to cost taxpayers upwards of $70 million — will likely not include hot food counters or butchers, EDC officials revealed during a board meeting Thursday.

“It may not have all the items, but it’s going to be like a typical grocery store,” insisted Jeanny Pak, interim CEO of the EDC, the powerful city-run nonprofit tasked with boosting economic growth and development.

Pak also echoed Mamdani’s assertion that only certain items in the stores would be discounted.

“We did a lot of analysis of what people buy in terms of their everyday goods,” she said. “Even if there are a lot of people who buy soda, we’re not discounting soda.”

The head-scratching statements around what exactly the city-owned stores would offer led some social media users to poke fun at the seemingly convoluted project.

“OMG, this is just destined to fail,” said one user on X. “Anyone with experience with a grocery store there? This is just such a bad idea.”

Another X user likened the concept to another popular grocery store chain. “This is a Trader Joe’s, basically,” they wrote.

On the campaign trail, Mamdani had vowed to open one city-owned grocery store in each borough, claiming that he would “use the power of government to lower prices and make it easier for New Yorkers to put food on the table.”

And yet, there's an opening for a socialist bartender. Odd.

They are already spreading the money around, and actually opening the municipally owned stores can be postponed indefinitely.

Never mind their rhetoric. It's primarily a graft project. If there are no stores before the next mayoral election, they can blame Trump or something.

Cuts into profits. In Mexico they keep chicken fresh by selling the birds when they’re still alive. I see the same thing coming.

Btw. Whitmer in Michigan just endorsed Stevens over Al Sayed for the senate seat. Won’t cost her. She’s on the way out and she’s not counting on payback in ‘28. Tells me these socialists will will get the knock out punch this year. We’ll see.

“In Mexico they keep chicken fresh by selling the birds when they’re still alive.”

Even the chicken vendors have to pay the cartels.

But none open until one possibly in late 2027 and at least one in 2029 (in Harlem) and others later.

Since they will be done by city funds why won’t they be ready tomorrow?

Sounds like the 8 completed EV charging stations paid for by billions of dollars under Biden to blanket the nation’s highways and city streets. Not all actually worked, by the way, but were installed.

“The federal government funded states and private companies via the $7.5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program to build a public network with a cumulative target of 500,000 total chargers by 2030.”

Reuters, July 25, 2025: “U.S. states have built less than 400 electric vehicle charging ports through April under $7.5 billion federal infrastructure programs...”

After having to deal with Winter snow, garbage piling up, Summer power outages, labor troubles, rampant crime, failing infrastructure, and a big population of disgruntled constituents, I'm pretty sure Mamdani The Great is getting the idea real quick that the "job is beneath him." As I commented at the outset, I'm thinking he finds a quick exit, probably intoning that, "I feel I am needed in a higher office."

By the way, I'm astonished that more people haven't commented on his uncanny resemblance to Borat. He IS the Borat Mayor.

I think its a great plan. If we had one here my Kroger store would not be crowded with those lowlife EBT club members. I can see a bright fresh smelling store without having to listen to mumbling third world sht or dodging their illegitimate offspring.
