Stranded tourists flee for their lives by boat as 'apocalyptic mega-fire' triggers total evacuation of 'French Hamptons' (many photos)

Thousands of tourists have been forced to flee a top French holiday hotspot, with many evacuated by boat to escape a raging wildfire.

The area of Lege-Cap Ferret in southwestern France - an upmarket tourist destination known as the French Hamptons - is in the middle of a total evacuation with thousands of hectares of forest burning and villas going up in smoke.

French President Emmanuel Macron has already requested help from the European Union as the country's growing battle against wildfires intensifies.

Images showed scores of residents boarding boats this morning as they evacuated the area while a French television report was interrupted by a fireball blast when a gas canister exploded.

Residents have described the inferno as a 'mega-fire' and 'apocalyptic', with few means of escape from the thin peninsula.

'France has requested the activation of the European Union's civil protection mechanism. We will soon be able to count on reinforcements from two Croatian Canadair aircraft, two Portuguese Air Tractor planes, as well as two heavy Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia,' wrote Macron on X on Friday.

Flames have burned over 10,000 hectares of land in the Gironde area, and at least 40,000 people have been evacuated from the Cap-Ferret peninsula.

Grab your wallets, purses, passports, cheese and as much vino as you can carry. Leave the dogs they will fend for themselves. Take the cats.

I grew up in a MORE ADVANCED Western Culture where we were able to prevent most wildfires. I guess as we revert towards a pre-industrial society, we’ll need to get used to seeing prior problems re-emerging.

Scary. Check with Gavin Newscum, he claims to be the expert.

And, of course, the French will lecture anyone within earshot about the dangers of “global warming” while helping evacuations.

Mayor Bass en route. She’s an expert on fire hydrant technology.

They’ll quickly issue permits to rebuild all the lost homes, right? Or will a beautiful new “low income” project be built on the ashes?

Since I had to check the map to make sure, I’ll share:

The “save the trees” disease reached Europe too.
The greens destroyed the sound forest management techniques everywhere and we are all now paying the price!

Wonder if it’s a land grab like the Lahaina and Pacific Palisades fires.

Interestingly, even in Europe, the most devastating fires are in National parks and similar nature reserves like in this case.
There, by definition, the forest management is banned or minimalized.

“There, by definition, the forest management is banned or minimalized.”

I always wondered. How do you clear the underbrush from thousands or millions of acres to stop disastrous fires? The underbrush is hauled off somewhere and burned in a huge bonfire?
