Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Has Epic Opening Day With $51 Million
Variety ^ | 18th July 2026 | Jack Dunn

Posted on 07/19/2026 7:08:47 AM PDT by Cronos

“The Odyssey” didn’t need a Trojan Horse to break into the top of Friday’s box office charts.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” earned $51 million on Friday from 3,919 North American screens. Early estimates had the saga grossing $90 million to $100 million by Sunday, but after a stellar opening day, forecasts have the film climbing as high as $120 million. “The Odyssey” will soon become the third film in 2026 to open above $100 million after “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million). “The Odyssey” carries a hefty $250 million price tag.

An $120 million opening for “The Odyssey” would rank as Nolan’s best since “The Dark Knight Rises,” which debuted to a staggering $160 million in 2012. Weekend one projections for “The Odyssey” blow past Nolan’s 2023 best picture winner, “Oppenheimer,” which made $82 million over its opening weekend and powered to $975 million by the end of its run. Also, with $51 million on Friday, “The Odyssey” has already outgrossed the entire opening weekend of Nolan’s 2014 opus “Interstellar” ($47.5 million).

Your choice. You’re wrong. I actually saw it. But whatever.

I’m the guy that actually saw the movie. And can use my own words.

Once again, Hollyweird has upturned reality for delusion and freaky-factor. They’re counting on non-woke folks going to or paying to see this out of curiosity due to the rigged ratings.

Oh, jeez louise, what a cluster...

This really is just an even more expensive One Battle after Another.

Money-losing agitprop Oscar bait.

Charging fewer butts in seats more money.

They’ve gone full Disney.

Hollyweird, you can’t go bust fast enough for my taste.

Discostu “It’s a great movie. The rumors of it’s wokeness are largely imaginary. Nolan knocks it out of the park, again, as always. He’s just that good.”

Thank you discostu.

I take it that you have already watched it?

Is it true that Lupita and Helen have barely any screen time?

Minority, discostu is a freeper who has been around here for 25 years, the same as I have, and just some months less than you.

I’ve argued with him and agreed with him on different topics over the years. At the very least he deserves a serious reading rather than a meme

Is that REALLY who plays Helen of Troy? I’m sure they could’ve gotten someone better looking, she looks like a Somali refugee.

I’m disappointed. Even with the 3 hour time I would go see it. It is NOT going to be a Lawrence of Arabia or Ten Commandments.

It still has Matt Damon. That alone is a hard no from me. He’d have me rooting for Odysseus to not make it home. Can’t stand the guy.

If Nolan stresses that he is into historical accuracy and then race swaps; he cannot be trusted. Not on anything.

Like finding out that your “uncle” is a pedo — what else has he been doing?

Yeah, the “woke” castings (Page and Lupita) are on screen a total of less than 5 minutes combined. And honestly the Lupita casting works. Surrounded by all those white people she is very striking, maybe not Helen beautiful, but remember this would be a Helen 10 years after a 10 year war in her “honor” how beautiful would she really be anymore? But you definitely know when Helen is in the room, so it works.

“I thought it would be a massive bomb.”

Jury is still out. Advanced ticket sales for opening weekend were high. Nolan has a dedicated audience. Opening weekend isn’t the problem, it’s second weekend drop off, which fewer media will report because they need this to be thought of a big success rather than a moderate one. They expect the public to be lazy and make hasty generalizations.

The Last Jedi made a tremendous amount of money and was praised by critics, but turned out to be the movie that really sank the franchise.

Thanks for the kind words. But I don’t expect much from the meme junkies. They aren’t here to be serious, they’re here to prove they should be ignored.

How did Lupita Whatever-O "earn" a Fine Arts degree from Yale U. without ever reading The Odyssey or the Iliad?

I had Claude.ai check the 40 top colleges in the U.S. for that degree requirements and every single one of them requires those classics for FRESHMEN.

‘I really had no idea what The Odyssey was,’ Lupita Nyongo says. ‘I was like, “Oh, snap, I don’t know the first thing about this.” So it was a crash course. I picked up the books and read them immediately. I have this film to thank for my Greek-mythological education.’

The issue is not how good or bad the movie is. The Black Helen of Troy and the Tranny is a purposeful thumb in our eye. Hollywood is out to prove woke can make money. The execs have admitted this and they have gone full out. They will not get a dime from me.

Rotten Tomatoes is totally rigged.
It was proven with Captain Marvel.
It’s useless.
WDW Pro has already explained the movies first weekend will seem like a blockbuster because of all the IMAX tickets by Nolan
It will drop off after that.

Once the new Spider-Man movie is out, this horrid take on the Odyssey is doomed. That movie will bury Odyssey in the first weekend.

The movie is woke BS that barely resembles the source material.
I’d be yelling constantly that’s not right
