Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Has Epic Opening Day With $51 Million
Variety ^ | 18th July 2026 | Jack Dunn

Posted on 07/19/2026 7:08:47 AM PDT by Cronos

“The Odyssey” didn’t need a Trojan Horse to break into the top of Friday’s box office charts.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” earned $51 million on Friday from 3,919 North American screens. Early estimates had the saga grossing $90 million to $100 million by Sunday, but after a stellar opening day, forecasts have the film climbing as high as $120 million. “The Odyssey” will soon become the third film in 2026 to open above $100 million after “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million). “The Odyssey” carries a hefty $250 million price tag.

An $120 million opening for “The Odyssey” would rank as Nolan’s best since “The Dark Knight Rises,” which debuted to a staggering $160 million in 2012. Weekend one projections for “The Odyssey” blow past Nolan’s 2023 best picture winner, “Oppenheimer,” which made $82 million over its opening weekend and powered to $975 million by the end of its run. Also, with $51 million on Friday, “The Odyssey” has already outgrossed the entire opening weekend of Nolan’s 2014 opus “Interstellar” ($47.5 million).

YouaTuber WDW Pro just put out a 15 minute vid on this subject ...

I highly recommend it for anyone who wants an honest take on the money and culture angles.

Do those casting choices cancel out the rest of the movie , as to whether it’s a decent film or not? When you see it, please let us know.

Chistopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is just a bad movie in almost every way. pic.twitter.com/MeSMhArcu8— Joe Redden | The Older Millennial (@teameffujoe) July 17, 2026

Quite frankly the woke idiots have never made movies a success. Not supergirl, not Ghostbusters female, not Charlie’s Angel’s the boring version.

I don’t think the woke idiots have the numbers that would bring in this kind of box office $$ or the audience score.

It’s moved up from a “no way in heck” movie (the mandalorian and grogu) to a maybe worth watching for me

I’ll try to remember to come back after I see it. From what I’ve heard those 2 are indeed bad news in it, but are only 15 minutes of screen total combined or so.

It’s an obvious misfire to do that, but will it ruin the whole thing? I doubt it. It’s basically those 2 actor choices and the ‘modernized dialog’ that seems to really be the issues. Will see.

“Might take the doobie to doze thru it”

A friend of mine wants desperately to see this crap and my plan is to get a nice 3 hour nap in the seat next to her. That, plus some Raisinets, might make it palatable.

I’ll retaliate later by renting some “guy” movie (like Dirty Harry or something) and making her watch it. :-)

The rotten tomatoes initial audience scores are rigged badly.

Still at 97%.

Usually their audience score is accurate. But I notice this time you have to be "verified".

Dims are turning out in support.

Which is why I predict they'll make one billion dollars from this movie.

Yes, you’re right.

In any case films come 3 to 4 weeks later to my neck of the woods, so I will look at the 2nd week box office

A good proof point. How well did it do 2nd week.

Top Gun: Maverick only dropped about 30% second week, which apparently was very good.

Apparently the shemale is not playing Achilles but playing Sidon. Simon is the “renegade “ Greek who convinces the Trojans to take the horse in. Simon is not in the Iliad or the Odyssey but in Aneid.

and there’s likely going to be a big 2nd week drop off.”

Doubtful, the non stop media press has probably created enough “buzz” to give it momentum. The entire left is pushing this thing. Looks like that will be enough to push it up enough to avoid fail.

This is the kind of s$%t that makes billionaires out of s$#theads who then use their dollars to tear down the U.S. from the comfort of their Lear jets, yachts, and $100 million houses. Go ahead and tithe them your twenty bucks for a ticket. It’s your new church. Go worship.

They panicked after they realized that people were making fun of the movie.

So there was nonstop publicity with this movie.

So what is their advertising budget?

It’s a great movie. The rumors of it’s wokeness are largely imaginary. Nolan knocks it out of the park, again, as always. He’s just that good.

I am seeing more and more reviews that say it’s not as bad as people expected. Yeah, some of the casting was “ill advised” but several people have said that the characters were not significant to the overall movie.

I might even spend a few bucks to see this on Senior night at the local cinema. (It might be worth $7.50.)
