“The Odyssey” didn’t need a Trojan Horse to break into the top of Friday’s box office charts.
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” earned $51 million on Friday from 3,919 North American screens. Early estimates had the saga grossing $90 million to $100 million by Sunday, but after a stellar opening day, forecasts have the film climbing as high as $120 million. “The Odyssey” will soon become the third film in 2026 to open above $100 million after “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million). “The Odyssey” carries a hefty $250 million price tag.
An $120 million opening for “The Odyssey” would rank as Nolan’s best since “The Dark Knight Rises,” which debuted to a staggering $160 million in 2012. Weekend one projections for “The Odyssey” blow past Nolan’s 2023 best picture winner, “Oppenheimer,” which made $82 million over its opening weekend and powered to $975 million by the end of its run. Also, with $51 million on Friday, “The Odyssey” has already outgrossed the entire opening weekend of Nolan’s 2014 opus “Interstellar” ($47.5 million).

I went and I thought it was good. The stunt casting was a distraction but didn’t really change anything and it was not a feminist polemic or DEI ‘white men are bad’ movie like everyone guessed. It’s an adventure movie with a court intrigue sideplot and well done (though the music is overly loud and the rapper pretending to be Homer (though never called that) banging his cane incredibly loudly from time to time sucked).
A movie even a play visually makes an attempt to make you a direct “observer” of the story. Delivers part of the story to you through your own eyes. If the story’s time and place is well known you have expectations as to what you will see. If you deliberately cast against that you wreck the visual message of the story. All there is left to tell the story is the dialogue you hear and its clashing with what you see. That necessary “suspension of reality” to enjoy the story is now broken. It might as well be a radio drama. Done as a radio drama the audience will mentally provide their own visual components.
I despise Shakespeare or any classic done in modern dress (or modern language!). If the fashion of the time is too trite for the modern producer. Do it as a audio(radio!) drama. If you have to do it.
So, the black Helen of Troy must have drawn in a huge African audience!
That’s the thing: it stays relatively true to the source material as per discostu who actually went and saw it.

It’s playing in every IMAX theater...typical ticket price $30-50 vs a normal $15...of course it will have a huge opening.
I’m glad there are thousands of old movies out there to enjoy, instead of high-tech, woke dreck like this.
I’ve been to Greece. You can pluck an absolutely gorgeous woman just about anywhere on those isles. This thing is not Greek or attractive in the slightest. Nolan may have well just cast Whoopie Goldberg. Progs love ugliness.

I have never quite understood the rating system of
Rotten Tomatoes. I usually just avoid reading about their take on movies. It Rotten T. has value to you, read and enjoy!

So it finished third to the fifth installment of an animated children’s movie, and another movie that is based on a 1990’s video game…doesn’t speak well of it no matter how much it is pushed.
