“The Odyssey” didn’t need a Trojan Horse to break into the top of Friday’s box office charts.
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” earned $51 million on Friday from 3,919 North American screens. Early estimates had the saga grossing $90 million to $100 million by Sunday, but after a stellar opening day, forecasts have the film climbing as high as $120 million. “The Odyssey” will soon become the third film in 2026 to open above $100 million after “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million). “The Odyssey” carries a hefty $250 million price tag.
An $120 million opening for “The Odyssey” would rank as Nolan’s best since “The Dark Knight Rises,” which debuted to a staggering $160 million in 2012. Weekend one projections for “The Odyssey” blow past Nolan’s 2023 best picture winner, “Oppenheimer,” which made $82 million over its opening weekend and powered to $975 million by the end of its run. Also, with $51 million on Friday, “The Odyssey” has already outgrossed the entire opening weekend of Nolan’s 2014 opus “Interstellar” ($47.5 million).

I wouldn’t say it’s depressing, especially not specifically to Western audiences. I mean it’s heavy on the price of war, and making sure you don’t lose your ideals to win a war. But, most of that is already in the story. The Odyssey is the story of paying an incredible price for a war, even after the war. Honestly if I really wanted to go deep into psychobabble you can see the whole thing as a parable for PTSD. If you find that depressing, well, make less war I guess.

Nolan made some big modifications to tone down the vengeance and emphasize the regret. The West must feel bad about its conquests, while the biggest colonizers and butchers in human history - Mohammedans - get a complete pass, both historically and from Hollywood.

I’m going to make a prediction: the movie WILL win awards. Why? Because that’s what “Hollywood” does. They’re in a delusional universe of their own making, and they’re going to be patting themselves on the back saying to each other “look what we did, aren’t we wonderful?” They make these movies for themselves, not us. Sure, they want our money, they can’t exist without it. They can’t force us to spend our money on their woke crap, so we can still voice our disapproval by NOT SEEING it.

Although listening to all this talk about the Odyssey is giving me bad flashbacks to eighth grade literature. I might have to do a cliff notes review before I go see it. LOL

You have to take it for what it is. I took note that Young Washington got 62% from reviewers, but 92% from viewers. I can’t give credit to that outcome, but discount the out some in this move. BYW, I’ve been watching the daily receipts on Washington. When yesterday’s come out some time today they should crack the $40 million level since release on 7/4.
My daughter had to read it in high school in a small town. She graduated 2013. It makes me wonder if the people going to see the movie have ever read the Odyssey.
I don’t think he did. The vengeance is really in the Iliad. The Odyssey is 10 years after that, being punished by the gods for what they did, and getting a chance to look back on it and wonder what it was worth and should they even have done it.
This wasn’t a conquest, it was a wipe out. They wiped Troy off the map, literally. And remember it is part of Homer’s story that the gods were not entirely pleased with any of it. They all had a hard time getting home. And didn’t get warm welcomes. The Odyssey is about paying the price of that vengeance, The Odyssey is about those seeking vengeance digging 2 holes.
And this was all thousands of years before Islam, so that’s a you problem.

Many of the people I follow on X have said it's spectacular *despite* the questionable casting choices (and they're not in the film very long at all). And these people are definitely not Democrats.
I feel I might go see it on IMAX. I've never seen a movie on an IMAX screen before.
