Florida schedules two death row executions on same day for first time in 60 years

Two death row inmates are scheduled to be put to death on the same day in Florida — the first double execution in the Sunshine State in over six decades.

Governor Ron DeSantis rescheduled the execution of former police officer and convicted child murderer James Duckett for 12 p.m. on July 28, exactly six hours before Dominick Anthony Occhicone Jr. is also set to be put to death, USA Today reported.

The 68-year-old former cop was set to be executed in March for murdering an 11-year-old girl in 1987, but he received a rare and temporary reprieve from the Florida Supreme Court, pending the results of new DNA testing.

However, the DNA testing was inconclusive and Duckett’s reprieve expired on July 11. His execution was rescheduled by DeSantis on July 14.

At 80-years-old, Occhicone, who was convicted of murdering the parents of his ex-fiancée in 1986, will be the oldest death row inmate executed in Florida and the second oldest in the US.

If the rare double executions go ahead, it will be the first time since 1964 that the Sunshine State will have executed two death row inmates on the same day, according to a Death Penalty Information Center execution database.

He also signed a law in 2025 that broadly expanded Florida’s execution methods to include anything “not deemed unconstitutional,” — but since no death penalty methods have ever been declared unconstitutional, experts warn that the law technically allows any imaginable method, from stoning to hanging.

Twofer.

The above passage misleadingly suggests that the U.S. Constitution is entirely silent on the matter of capital punishment and the methods to carry it out.

In fact, the U.S. Constitution (8th Amendment) explicitly prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments.

So the only reason no death penalty methods have ever been declared un-Constitutional is that, so far, no "cruel and usual" method was employed.

As someone who has had a couple of major surgeries, I don’t understand the problem with the methods used in death penalty cases.

In the hospital, they give you things that are not painful in anyway, the just put you to sleep and for the most part it’s instant, 1-2 seconds and you are gone.

I’m sure they could easily up the dosage and the person would just die and never feel any pain or discomfort.

Would be nice if they could carry out the sentence in a Gas Chamber Built for Two.

Would send a powerful message!

Michael Garibaldi (Babylon-5) had the right idea: "Not electric chairs - electric bleachers!"

Film the executions, copyright them, publish them and give the money to the state to re-emburse it for taking care of these pigs for all these years.

Had an anesthesiologist who looked better than Katherine Webb. I remember looking straight into her amazing eyes and saying, "I smell something." I've been searching for her ever since.

Pharmaceutical companies will not sell to prisons for executions. I always favored nitrogen asphyxia. Somewhat slow, painless, and there are no hazardous substances (80% of the atmosphere) to deal with. One jamoke who was executed using a face mask made gasping sounds and writhing gestures under the restraints, but he was almost certainly feigning distress to embarass the authorities or in hopes of a temporary repreive. He died.

“The restraints are too tight. They hurt!”

“No worries, we’ll loosen them once you are dead.”

Carbon monoxide. Heck, some folks self-administer. Doesn’t hurt. Cost - a tank of gas and a vent pipe.

Carbon monoxide is toxic, even in small concentrations, even when mixed with oxygen. Nitrogen, when mixed with air, is harmless.

Respiratory distress is a reaction to the build up of carbon dioxide in the blood. Breathing nitrogen allows removal of carbon dioxide which prevents any feeling of respiratory distress while depriving the body of oxygen, and causing death.

I think the ex-cop should be stoned to death. Let's test Gov. DeSantis’ new law.

The problems are all conjured as part of the virtue signaling religion that denies evil and justice because it is evil and unjust.

It's an unpleaseant duty but our governments need to do it much more often and expeditiously. Our Justice vandalsim is bankrupting us.

I know of someone who used helium to take their life.

Hooked up an oxygen mask to the bottle, laid down, went to sleep, and died.
