WASHINGTON — The highest-ranking woman in the House of Representatives is calling for a “bright-line rule” prohibiting lawmakers from having sexual relationships with congressional staff after The Post revealed Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) slept with at least two aides to Texas Democrats.
Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), chairwoman of the House Republican Caucus, told The Post that “Senator Gallego’s relationships fall short of the standard the public expects from elected officials.”
“Congress should have a bright-line rule that Members should not have romantic or sexual relationships with congressional staff,” the No. 4 House Republican said.
“Even if a relationship is consensual, there is an inherent power imbalance that can undermine trust and create an appearance of impropriety. The goal should be protecting staff and maintaining confidence in the institution,” she said.
“My standard is the same regardless of party or personality. Members of Congress should be held to a high ethical standard whether they have an ‘R’ or a ‘D’ next to their name.”
The House of Representatives approved a policy in 2018 — at the height of the #MeToo movement — banning its members from having relationships with their own employees — after four lawmakers resigned for alleged misconduct.
That policy does not explicitly bar relationships with staff from other offices and was not adopted by the Senate.
Gallego’s activities were revealed by The Post on Thursday after Democratic sources dished on the freshman senator’s dalliances during his decade representing Phoenix in the House.

1. not quite right. the accused senator’s sexual escapades are very much consistent with what we have grown to expect from Capitol Hill
2. maybe bring in the UnitedNazis as a “piece-keeping force” to monitor and, where necessary, install chasity gear on senators exhibiting any errant libado
3. cameras to monitor any congress-critters visiting the Tidal Basin, too..... (referring to a famous 1974 political sex scandal involving Arkansas Congressman Wilbur Mills and Argentine exotic dancer Fanne Foxe. Following a late-night police stop, Ms. Foxe leaped or fell into the Washington, D.C., Tidal Basin, an incident that effectively ended the Congressman’s political career.)
4. the brothels around Capitol Hill would need to be shut down ... a not-new thought ... (as when Bringham Henry Roberts (significant LDS church historian and defender of its pre-1890 plural (polygamy) doctrine) was elected to Congress from Utah but had his seat eventually denied him over his plural marriages (I believe he had 3 wives at the time). To a challenger’s speech against seating him, BH famously was said to have retorted: “”At least I marry them and give them my name”-————everyone knew that the challenger was a frequent patron of the nearby whore-houses servicing Congressional and other WashedUpDC “public officials” I believe that debate occurred in 1899, so Congress’ sexual escapades have been a matter of some public record for quite a long time
