Adam Silver Stepped in to Clean up WNBA’s Caitlin Clark Mess With Cathy Engelbert Under Fire

The WNBA wasn’t going to suspend Alyssa Thomas after landing her fist on Caitlin Clark’s throat until the NBA got involved.

According to the Sports Business Journal, NBA commissioner Adam Silver had to implore WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to suspend Thomas. A WNBA spokesperson told SBJ the report was “absolutely false.” Thomas was ultimately suspended one game and assessed a Flagrant 2 penalty while getting fined $1,000 for “recklessly making contact with her fist to the throat area.”

According to the report, Engelbert originally thought no foul called on the play originally made a suspension after the fact too steep of a penalty. Sources told SBJ Engelbert is in a difficult position trying to not show favoritism to Clark and trying to appease the players that feel overshadowed by her. They said they believe that the WNBA commissioner has gone too far trying not to prioritize the Fever’s star.

The WBNA is owned by the NBA. The WNBA loses about $50M/year, so they survive by the funding of the NBA, that's the commissioner of the NBA has control.

Well, I don’t know anything about the profitability of the NBA or individual franchises.

I wonder how much NBA team owners like seeing their profits eroded, because they have to subsidize women’s basketball.

If women’s basketball cannot survive financially without a subsidy, maybe there’s just not a big market for it.

Or does the NBA just want to make a political statement, with endless ongoing subsidies of the WNBA.

Yes, let’s be careful not to offend the ugly, envious, giant, black lesbians flagrantly attacking Caitlin Clark because she’s not.

Free hand of the marketplace and all... could the WNBA be re-imagined in a different format of play that WOULD be profitable? Even if it doesn’t resemble pro basketball anymore? I’ve seen advertisements in my area for women offering to come clran your house while fully naked and you are welcome to closely supervise to verify that the work is being done. $100/hour or some such rate. Just an extreme ecample.

The WNBA is very much like the U.S. Postal System,, it LOSES 5 BILLION Dollars a year... "But we NEED It".

This melodrama has dragged on for so long, I’m starting to wonder if the bullying ‘attacks’ are being allowed just to spice up the action and grab attention, you know, the way Pro Hockey was allowed to become decades ago.
Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Women’s Basketball.

It seems ALL Pro Basketball (for men or for women) has become far more physically aggressive than 30 years ago.
It closely resembles a Street Fight in many instances.

Ghetto thinking from start to finish.

Men’s basketball has become much, much less physical over the year. We leave in the age of flopping, where if you get breathed on you collapse in agony. And you have LeBron James, who looks like a Power Forwards, but it the most delicate and wimpy player there is.

Could be. I haven’t watched a great deal of either Sport.
I’m going by what I may happen to see on general news shows.

Caitlin should sue the NBA, WNBA and both commissioners for creating a hostile and life threatening environment. She’d end up owning the league if she got the right judge.

I don't recall any violence against Michael Jordan or LeBron James in the NBA by other players who felt 'Over Shadowed' by the GOATs of Basketball.

How about these prima donnas working up some maturity and recognizing that Clark is better than them and either learning to live with it or working on their own skills and competing honestly.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is the fastest player in WNBA history to record both 1,000 points and 500 assists, reaching the milestone in just 59 games. She holds the league record for the fastest player to 600 career assists, which she achieved in only 72 games. Caitlin is a pretty good lady basketball player.

Um, have you ever heard of the Detroit Pistons, considered the Bad Boys of the NBA, Pontiac?

They pounded Michael Jordan his first few years in the league.

Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were fierce competitors on the basketball court. Off the court they were dear friends.
