WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday that he is rolling out a new screening program for “testosterone deficiency” among troops, calling it necessary to allow them to operate at their “absolute best.”

The screenings will be conducted annually as part of service members’ required medical screenings for those 30 and older, he said. Troops under 30 can volunteer to be tested. In a video on social media, Hegseth said receiving testosterone replacement therapy would be voluntary.

In the video, Hegseth simply refers to troops, though it appears he is talking about only testing men in uniform for hormone irregularities.

The move comes as other Trump administration officials have begun to advocate for men to have easier access to testosterone replacement therapies, but the messaging from Hegseth and others blends known science on the hormone with broader, and less substantiated, claims.

Testosterone use in the military has previously come under scrutiny When asked what conditions Hegseth was looking to address with the new policy, the Pentagon referred to Hegseth’s remarks in the video that mentioned keeping troops “strong, resilient and capable” and that the rigors of the modern battlefield demand “maximum psychological and mental readiness.”

Over the past several years, special operations troops — and specifically Navy SEALs — have come under scrutiny for their use of testosterone and similar substances to enhance performance.

“Don’t forget the gals. A lot of the trannys gals want testing too.”

Good point! Hegseth also can offer free testing to Thune and other Washington DC RINO obstructionists.

Shouldn’t he be focusing on the war, not testosterone levels?

He is, war is not won by men, he is making sure we have men to win the war.

That this escapes you says a good bit.

Hegseth simply refers to troops, though it appears he is talking about only testing men in...

Only the American media would think this needs clarification.

I think this is nuts.

I’ve always liked Hegseth; but this is stupid. Is he going to force people who don’t meet his criteria to take some kind of replacement therapy?

If men are concerned about this, they can see to it in private.

What’s the point, anyway, except to embarrass men who may not be up to snuff in terms of Hegseth’s standards?

Again, this is nuts. It reminds me of many managers I’ve known who came up with a useless new idea just because they could and wanted to make a mark.

Can’t low T be solved with diet and excercise? Sounds like, doesn’t that help fix the issue?

It’s a good way to select people with good traits for warriors.

AI Overview

Testosterone directly drives key physical attributes that enhance athletic performance, including increased muscle mass, decreased body fat, stronger bone density, and elevated red blood cell production.

Then why do it? The article says it will be routine testing for required annual physicals.

Again, men can seek tests for this on their own instead of making testing mandatory.
