I clicked on my bookmark for Free Republic.
The splash page came up.
And then in dawned on me:
Free Republic is 30 years old this year!
I just looked, since Feb. 1999-
“You’ve posted a total of 68 threads and 24,395 replies.”
And I would bet half of those posts are placemarker periods.
One of the old threads I have linked on my home page -

Thank you Jim Thompson! lol
I found FR from a link on the Drudge Report, right before Drudge removed it because someone on FR rightly called him a pole smoker.
I think Jim had on up about a year before I heard CAL on Rush and started lurking. Amon, Yellow Rose of Texas and Two Thirds Vote Aye convinced me to register. I remember after the first two weeks Rose told me “you need and editor.”
Take Two Aspirin...

I find this place a Good source for My Comic Relief.

I Am a Stand-Up Philosopher.
Does anyone remember the Jefferson Project from 30 years ago? I was on that site until I discovered Free Republic.
You don’t know what made FR great.
I leared (not a typo!) about FR on one of the newsgroups, I forget the exact name but I think it had something to do with impeaching Slick Willy Clinton. I’m coming up on my 28th birthday in a few months!
What a long strange trip it’s been...
You nailed it all, F4US.
So many sites are so full of crap that they are totally unusable. The worst of the worst are newspapers. Popup after popup after popup...pretty soon you have a postage stamp sized window of “content” peeking through.
All of us love the old-school, simple, reliable approach here on FR. A bit of very basic html if you want to make a list or post a pic or throw in a link. Easy peasy.
@ Responsibility2nd:
This website works great, stays stable, does not required constant learning curves, and is easy to use. It has depths of functionality that may not be obvious to newbies but have been discovered and enhance the experience of those who stick around and value FR. Its contributions from “regulars” who take the time to share their talents are worth a dozen or more expensive media subscriptions. It’s a great site for people who like to read and who have real-world experience, good memories and accumulated knowledge of our civic systems.
What a shame you come on a thread celebrating FR to condemn it.
Do better.
Ping!
Luci Anne sent me here.
Big list ping! Celebrate!
Yay! Happy Anniversary, Free Republic.
My home away from home.
Yeah!
HOORAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOO HOO!!!
Seventeen Years for me.
n00b.
I’m only 18. Legal in some states. I lurked for ten years. I remember I had made a copy from FR where Hilary! made her “take away things from you for the common good” speech. I found FR from Drudge. I haven’t been back in over ten years.
I came here due to links from Drudge, then decided to join in 2007. Thought I’d better start donating monthly in 2009.
Coming up on 24 years for me - didn’t want to endanger my clearance by doing more than lurking before that.
