More than 2.5 million bottles of eye drops have been recalled by the manufacturer due to contamination by a foreign substance.
Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc. initiated the ongoing recall of Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension eye drops on June 6. The recall is classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Class II recall, which is the second-most serious type of recall. As the agency explains, it’s “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
A total of 2,530,182 bottles are impacted by the recall. The eye drops are a prescription steroid used to treat inflammation, like “redness, itching, and swelling,” the Mayo Clinic says. The inflammation may be caused by allergies, infections, or injuries like thermal and chemical burns.
The recall includes 132 batches of 5 mL bottles, 36 batches of the 10 mL size, and 22 batches of 15 mL — with expiration dates ranging from July 31, 2026, to February 29, 2028. A full list of affected products is available on the FDA recall page.
