England and Mexico played out one of the greatest games in World Cup history before a Pom ended up in hospital in bizarre circumstances.
Football fans have witnessed two of the best round of 16 matches they could have imagined on Monday.
First up a stunning result turned the World Cup on its head as Erling Haaland led Norway to a historic 2-1 triumph over Brazil.

It was a game that had it all, from goals to a send-off, bench melees and even a bizarre injury to England star Jordan Henderson following the celebrations.
Amidst all the delight of the England players and fans, midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a nasty injury in bizarre fashion.
The substitute, who was yellow-carded despite not playing a minute, joined his teammates as they were serenaded by England fans singing Oasis once again after winning a World Cup classic against Mexico.
But as the celebrations died down and Henderson returned to the pitch, he tripped and fell over the advertising hoardings.
The former Liverpool captain appeared to land awkwardly on his wrist and he was whisked away on a stretcher before being taken to hospital.

Baseball is 14 minutes of action packed into 3 hours. If most baseball players had to play a soccer game, many would have heart attacks before the hydration break.
ok, while it’s just opinion, which was better?
The Spurs’ Tim Duncan got ejected for laughing - while he was on the bench.
Yep. Kane was going for the ball, the tip of his boot seemingly touching the ball (in one frame at least). These micro-reviews leading to severe outcomes (from nothing to red card/penalty) has to go...
It was half an hour of pure anxiety for me.
*cough* 7-1 *cough*
And now you get a red card for covering your mouth when talking to an opposing player.
Now that IS stupid!.............
Brazil has one of the most impressive records in FIFA World Cup history, making them the most successful national team in the tournament.
Key Achievements
5 World Cup titles (record): 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. No other nation has more than 4.
Only team to qualify for every World Cup (23 appearances as of 2026) — never missed a single edition since 1930.
Most matches played: 114+.
Most wins: 76–79 (depending on exact count).
Most goals scored: 237–247+.
Best goal difference: +129 or higher.
Longest unbeaten run in one tournament: Undefeated in 2002 (won all 7 matches).
Standout Highlights
1958 & 1962: Back-to-back wins featuring a young Pelé.
1970: Widely regarded as one of the greatest teams ever; won all 6 matches in Mexico with iconic attacking football.
Wins across four continents (Europe, South America, North America, Asia) — a unique feat.
Consistent deep runs: Multiple runner-up (1950, 1998), third-place (1938, 1978), and fourth-place (1974, 2014) finishes.
Brazil's style, star power (Pelé, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, etc.), and longevity set them apart. While recent tournaments (including 2026) have brought challenges, their historical dominance remains unmatched.
I’m not arguing about what they did in the past. I am basically saying since 2014, they’ve been average, and certainly not up to the standards of those great teams.
France is the best at it right now. Whatever they're doing, it's working.
are not “average”.
They are better than most of the top soccer countries on earth.
For example England didn't win even a single match at group stages in 2014 World Cup, losing 2 and only managing a 0-0 draw with pathetic Costa Rica.
To me, it’s like watching a basketball game on a bigger field.
And the score ends up 2-0.
Football is just more fun to watch.
Dribble dribble pass
Dribble dribble pass
And kick it back to the same person.
They don’t seem to have a plan.
Fall down and act like you’re hurt.

Exactly!
And
I still say if I was a baseball player,
I would play cricket.
The highest score by a player in a
single inning of cricket is 1,009 runs,
achieved by Pranav Dhanawade in a
school match. This record surpassed
the previous long-standing record of
628 runs by A. E. J. Collins.
FOR OVER 90 MINUTES IN 94 DEGREES ON FIELD 300’ X 100 ‘.
IIRC- HE WAS YELLOW CARDED FOR BEING OFF THE FIELD & HOLDING UP PROCEEDINGS.
All of these pale in comparison to the late Bobby Knight’s antics on the basketball courts that got him, THE COACH, ejected from games!.............
Call it the Mark Kelly factor.
And wouldn’t we love to see Mexico fans turn on him with a vengeance.
The GAME OF THE CENTURY!!!!!
Until the next game of the century comes along.
And still the scoring was lower than a baseball game’s pitcher duel, and equally boring.
Again it was not game of the century.
Not even game of this World Cup.
I watched the game in full.
Not even close to game of anything.
