In “Supergirl,” a melodramatic cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” scores a climactic battle sequence, with the song’s lyrics meant to offer encouragement to the plucky heroine: “Hey, don’t write yourself off yet…”
Yet the initial box office results for “Supergirl” would suggest that audiences are, in fact, writing off the film — and continuing to reject lesser-known comic book protagonists. The Warner Bros. and DC Studios adaptation, which centers on Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, misfired with $37.1 million in North America and $62.6 million globally in its opening weekend. Monday’s final tally was below Sunday’s estimate of $38 million domestically and $68 million worldwide. After launching below expectations, the big-budget film is shaping up to be a money loser for the studio, as well as a major setback for the newly rebooted DC Universe.
Warner Bros. and DC spent $170 million to produce and roughly $120 million to market the comic book adventure, which takes place in outer space as Supergirl and an alien girl named Ruthye embark on a quest for vengeance and justice. Those lackluster initial ticket sales are concerning because “Supergirl” hasn’t been widely embraced by the general public, and there’s intense competition during the height of summer movie season, which could hobble the film’s box office staying power. Next weekend sees the release of another family-friendly film, Universal’s animated “Minions & Monsters,” while Disney’s live-action “Moana,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” round out the month of July.

Try again. Next time cast Sidney Sweeney as Supergirl.
Supergirl’s heroine seemed much less photogenic than those of the Marvels, which also lost money but racked up 50% more box office. Superhero movie fandom skews male, so this matters big time. Very surprised they went with a lead who isn’t exactly ugly, but also not leading lady caliber in looks.
A faithful implementation of a girl superhero movie will work; it is just has not been tried yet. If only the studios could figure out why the Lynda Carter version of Wonder Woman attracted an audience of people who like superhero stuff and all the others didn’t, they might be able to make a profitable movie.
She also didn’t come across well in her promotional tour. Even politics aside. Don’t think her strong British accent helped in America. I remember long ago David Prowse (Darth Vader) wanted to be Superman and they told him Superman had to be an American.
This is a semi thread hijack. James Gunn was fired from Disney when it came out he had engaged in years of vile pedophile “jokes” which weren’t really jokes they were just vile.
Being good leftists, the cast of Guardians threatened to quit if he wasn’t reinstated.
All this was swept under the rug and he became head of DC Studios.
Guardians 3 has a completely gratuitous scene in which they rescue hundreds of blonde hair blue eyes little kids in pajamas, which I feel certain was Gunn’s FU to the world for his pedo scandal.
I like a lot of this stuff but I have serious questions about him.
Australian. It wasn’t the accent. It was the slogan -
“Truth. Justice. Whatever.”
Who wants to go to a super HERO movie with no hero?
I thought that was a joke slogan.
Kathleen Kennedy: “Put a chick in it! Make her lame and gay!
It was supposed to be HER slogan - that there are no heroes. Nothing worth fighting for. And that was the theme of the movie, too.
In the end, she was fighting for her DOG. Because the bad guy had injected him with a poison instead of just shooting him. ?? A poison that takes 3 days to kill. ?? And instead of going to a vet or going to a places where the dog’s superpowers will save him (??), she needs to go kill the bad guy so she can get the antidote. Because he wears the antidote around his neck. ?? And then go back to being a drunk slob.
How inspiring!
But then, I guess I'm not the intended audience. I don't know the difference between DC and Marvel.
Who wants to watch that foolishness, except those similarly afflicted? THey have a mental illness and a thirst for legitimacy , a and absolute totalitarian power over others, not freedom.
The fact that the movie made no money shows how small the queer community in America truly is. We should hardly hand them over any cultural power over us.
Open a theatre in Sodom and Gomorrah.
Hollywood has made the Marlboro Man into a queer with Broke Back Mountain, and now they are going to work on our super heros ?
HANDS OFF !
Super girl is multi-orgasmic with her fellow male super heros. She has super powers of seduction for the masculine male characters in her worlds. She refuses to be made into a queer, as evidenced by the movies dismal commercial failure.
Hollywood is anti American, and the film industry refuses to discover that there is no money in the destruction and hatefulness of , or lefty editing of American heroic culture.
Buy a Captain America or Superman T shirt today, and wear it.
We patriots are your heroes.
Pass it on to your children , grand children and great grans children.

That’s pretty weak.
Warner Bros. should put a halt to all DC projects, assemble a top notch team, come up with a plan, and restart the studio ten years from now with top notch stars, directors, etc.
DC is a mess. At least Marvel has their act together.
I always been more of a Marvel person than a DC one. DC seemed second rate to me.
Gunn should get fired and probably will once Paramount’s acquisition has been completed.
I wouldn’t pay to see her movie for the same reasons I didn’t buy her comic books.
"Milly Alcock"
Based on current box office, the film will struggle to break even, against several other highly competitive Summer film releases.
We need to change the tax code so these leftist studios can’t just write off their bad decisions.
I think the real lesson is that people dont really care about super heroes anymore after Avengers Endgame. Spiderman and Batman will probably keep making money since they were always popular.
Marvel makes superhero movies for fans by fans. DC makes crappy modern movies using superheroes as licensed properties. That being said, DC makes great animated movies. And a lot more of them than Marvel does. If DC were to make a decent 2 hour animated movie, hell I’d almost go to the theater to see it.
