Donahue previously oversaw the final phase of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan under the Biden administration.

It's remarkable that anyone associated with withdrawal wasn't compelled to resign, either by conscience or by directive.
I’ve posted this before, I was Navy from 1978 to 1998. Things I saw:
Black DIE was the main focus in the 80s. Getting blacks promoted was the key to getting promoted. I worked for black chiefs I am confident were illiterate.
In the 90s, female DIE came into fashion. I had a Master Chief of the Command walk into a meeting of recruiting supervisors and announce “there aren’t enough women in this meeting”. There were no women in the meeting because there were no women qualified. Women did not want to be recruiters. It was hard and stressful. However, they did like to work in support for 8 hours a day 5 days a week, and eventually I ended up working for one them. They promoted a female to chief, in a recruiting command, who had never recruited a person in her life. Can anyone imagine how demoralizing that is to a recruiter who had spent 12 years trying to make chief and was denied that billet for an unqualified female?
I spent 30 years in the USAF, the last 10 as an O6 trying to protect some semblance of unbiased professionalism in my beloved JAG Corps while seeing 80% of my superiors become woke. Made the GO-eligible list (”Screened”) for GO 3 times, never got placed in an eligible billet (White male Christian, don’cha know).

Stands to reason a retired one star would complain about politicians. He has never, or been forced to, learned that he worked for congress, not himself, when he was wearing the uniform.
For years the unit manning document (umd) has displayed a cutting of the enlisted force, the people who get the work done and the growth of upper tear ranks in commands for all branches. And as long as those ranks in that upper tear grew, they weren’t replacing them with people that did the work, just to assign an undermanned enlisted force to accomplish more and more overtaxed work to be done.
I remember a phrase we used to use:
I’ve done so much with so little for so long, I’m now qualified to do anything with nothing.

He was a 4 star. Changes via consolidation of commands (to place more focus on PACOM) yielded fewer 4 star slots.
He could have taken the 3 star role offered. Instead he took the 4 star pension and will start his job at defense contractor of choice in six months after doing whatever the h3ll he wants.

Donahue did his job as directed and the blame for those Marine deaths should be placed squarely on the Biden Administration for favoring the optics of a rapid draw down to the security and safety of everyone involved.
My son, was a Navy Captain with 25+ years and was working at the Pentagon and NSA when obummer was President and had a real shot at a promo, but could not stand the way the President was screwing with the military and took retirement.
He never talks about particulars {Top Secret} but says he doesn't regret his choice.
He is one of many officers and ncos that took an early reirement rather than serve with that man born in africa lead our country.

LOL. This sounds like the train wreck of a hospital system where my wife works. It’s bleeding money like a deer that is gut shot.
I understand there are some commands that did not exist 50 years ago. Things like Space force and cyber defense.
But there seems to be a lot of support commands that did not exist (at least in that form) 50 years ago. There are a lot of staff jobs, especially at the O5 and O6 level (where a lot of my classmates went for their last 4 years. It’s where my son in law is headed for his next positon.)
In the business world we would undergo a 10-15% headcount cut every 10 years or so. It’s like pruning a tree so it will produce more in the coming years.
Generals, if they retire at the rank, get sweet benefits. Lots of money, health care, benefits, and connections that get them deep six figure jobs afterwards.
I always give my college roommate grief for getting out of the Army and becoming a “consultant”. He acts as the liaison between post grad dweebs and the military contractors running civilian/military programs. He can “speak” to the commanders in their language. He is 65 years old still getting fat off Uncle Sugar. I love him like a brother…but he is superfluous.

I would fire George Washington if he had his hands in the Afgan withdrawal. Seriously, the guy should not have lasted this long.
