Yes, Elon Musk is richer than Mansa Musa by modern measurable standards. Current Wealth Figures Elon Musk (as of mid-2026): His net worth is estimated at around $1.2 trillion (Bloomberg, Forbes), driven largely by stakes in Tesla and SpaceX (which went public via IPO, pushing him past the trillion-dollar mark). This makes him the first confirmed trillionaire in modern records.

Mansa Musa (r. ~1312–1337): Popular estimates put his wealth at roughly $400 billion (sometimes $300–500 billion) in today's dollars, based on his empire's control of gold and salt trade, and accounts of his lavish 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca that caused inflation in places like Cairo.

Musk's fortune has surpassed the common $400 billion benchmark for Musa, especially after recent surges.

Important Caveats on the Comparison Comparing wealth across 700 years is inherently flawed:

Mansa Musa's wealth was tied to an empire—he effectively owned vast gold mines, trade routes, land, and the state itself. Historians (e.g., via Wikipedia and BBC) emphasize it's impossible to calculate accurately. Contemporary accounts described him as "inconceivably rich," but modern dollar conversions are speculative and methodologically shaky because they mix feudal/monetary systems with today's asset valuations, inflation adjustments, and global economies. Some views argue his economic dominance (relative to the world's smaller GDP at the time) was unmatched.

Elon Musk's wealth is mostly in publicly traded equity (stocks), which is liquid but volatile and subject to market forces. He doesn't "own" governments or natural monopolies in the same absolute way.

In raw modern net-worth terms (the usual way these comparisons are framed online), Musk is ahead. In terms of historical relative power or "richest ever" legends, Mansa Musa still gets the crown from many historians and popular narratives.

Bottom line: By today's billionaire metrics and available estimates, Elon is richer. But apples-to-oranges historical adjustments mean it's not a perfect or settled debate. Musk's trajectory (tech, space, AI) continues to grow his position in real time.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

I've gotten a bit fed up with all these black guys on YouTube/Tik Tok etc who keep claiming Musa was richer than Musk. Same black guys who do "No Kings" protests against Trump.

The “We Wuz Kangs” movement is having quite the revival.

Mansa Musa stepped into leadership in an already thriving. Much of Musk’s wealth was built from scratch.

I'm glad Musk has become the first Trillionaire. He has dedicated his whole life to expanding Civilization off planet. Ever since Mankind has created weapons capable of destroying Civilization the need for off world places where Civilization thrives is needed more than ever. Now Elon has the capital to get that done . I predict he will become the first man to own private property on the Moon .

I might add opening up the Solar System to human occupation means people can move away from other people they rather not co-exist with. Yep. I'm looking at you Mad Moe and your evil religious Mafia.

It just occurred to me why God has allowed an evil religion that does evil in his name to exist . Even after 14 centuries! Islam exists to provide people with the incentive to move away from it! It literally is why the New World was discovered. Seeking an alternative path to China that did not have to go thru Islamoland. As usual God is turning evil to good.

Mansa Musa owned and sold slaves.

It must be good to do that.

Tesla

If the Democrats let in cheap Chinese EVs to “save the planet”, the value of Tesla will drop fast.

SpaceX

Is the ability to put satellites in orbit fairly cheap worth even a trillion? Most people got along fine with fiber optic Internet, mobile phones, etc. before SpaceX became significant.

The Chinese will want the capability Space X offers, and they’ll make it themselves. China aims to be #1 on the good things of significance.

Except they would have to steal the technology to leave. Their culture is incapable of producing it.

Folks, this is not correct. In terms of REAL EARTHLY WEALTH, Mansa Musa was much richer than anyone who ever lived, including Elon Musk.

Consider Elon Musk:

His Wealth is tied to volatile stock valuations.

He Cannot liquidate large amounts without collapsing the price.

Much of his lifestyle is funded by debt against his shares.

His “trillionaire” status is not liquid or tangible.

As for Mansa Musa… Some historians argue his effective purchasing power was equivalent to multiple trillions, because he controlled over half of the world’s gold supply at the time.

Mansa Musa had camels buckling under the weight of pure gold. Musk has a screen with a trillion pixels.

“If the Democrats let in cheap Chinese EVs to “save the planet”, the value of Tesla will drop fast.”

Nope.
Tesla sales in China are doing great, despite massive competition from Chinese EV makers.

Musa had plenty of gold?
So what?

Grok estimates his net worth at $400 Billion. Impressive but not a Trillion. Musk CAN liquidate large amounts without collapsing the prices of stocks.
Most billionaires regularly, quietly liquidate large amounts in stock with no problems. You just don't announce in advance.

Matter of perspective. Musa’s “wealth” was from conquered peoples who retained most of it in their physical possession while he laid claim to it. That’s not too far off from being wealthy by today’s standards where almost no one has real physical proof of it other than data on a screen or a bank’s word for it.

But I’m the idiot who keeps saying that all currency is a shared suspension of disbelief necessary for civilization’s continuation, barely worth the cloth it’s printed on.

The article writer meant slavery.

Mansa Musa sat on top of a slave empire.
