Did Darwin help start WWI?

The Biology of the Second Reich: Social Darwinism and the Origins of World War I reveals the ideological and scientific roots of the war that gave rise to Nazi Germany and the horrors of the Holocaust.

To German intellectuals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wars of annihilation were the natural outgrowth of Darwinian evolution’s survival of the fittest mantra, a “natural law, without which the organic world...could not continue to exist at all,” observed German zoologist Gustav Jaeger in 1870.

Darwin clearly saw the implications of natural selection for human society.

In his The Descent of Man, Darwin worried that civilized societies were harming humanity by helping the poor, caring for the sick, and otherwise saving those whom nature would have killed off. He feared that humanitarianism would eventually destroy the human race.

Among German political leaders, social thinkers, and scientists, Darwin’s idea of natural selection, where the fit survive and reproduce and the less fit die off, provided biological justification for world domination..

Deliberately or not, he helped give rise to atheistic sociakism and the idea that men could be turned into superman if evolutionary pressures applied.

I am not a Darwinist, but Reformed Social Darwinism suggests that the intelligence and creativity and conscience we have developed can be used to allow for and even foster the survivability of the many, as mere survival is not the only goal of life. Even in a straight natural selection play, there is no guarantee that more intelligence or strength by itself improves survivability. Social “skills” from bees on up have a role.

The Second Reich was neither atheistic nor socialist.
Don't confuse your Reiches. ;)

Liberalism is an atheistic socialist belief system, so is the Fourth Reich. All 20th socialism was about replacing God and accomplishing God’s purposes without God.

You should take a closer look at the Second Reich. Bismarck in particular instituted “state socialism”, out of which national socialism was a development.

If memory serves it was Darwin’s cousin who was a very vocal supporter of eugenics.

That is not true. Classical Liberalism is not a atheistic socialist belief system. Even now not all Liberals are Atheists or believers in Socialism.

Few liberals believe in Classical Liberalism. So many liberals believe in socialism that they vote for it. I understand that you want to keep what it used to mean, but that meaning is no longer applicable.

If you want Classical Liberalism, you have to vote for Libertarian-Conservatism or Conservative-libertarianism. Otherwise, you are the Trojan horse that is increasing sociakism in America.

It is a 18th century agrarian theory that science accepts without the smallest amount of proof.

Social Darwinism was a misreading of Decent of Man to support racist beliefs and ideologies. “Fitness” is determined by the ecological niche for a human population. White skinned Germans would be at a substantial disadvantage living in sub-Saharan Africa without the survival skills and adaptations of the locals in Namibia. There is no universal form of “fitness.”

In a state of nature without laws or moral constraints those with a “strong will” domininate those with a “weak will.” This was accepted even in advanced societies like Greece and Rome that considered slavery to be moral.

Modern civil society evolved to constrain those with a strong will through laws, customs, and moral traditions to maintain a semblance of peace rather than living in the perpetual “parabellum,” of all against all.

What ultimately stopped WWI was the stronger will of Great Britain, France, and the USA to defeat the weaker will of the Second Reich military cult and restore a state of peace.

This holds true even today with test of will between Radical Islam and the Enlightened Western democracies. Islam is banking on the West preferring to live on their knees as slaves rather than standing and fighting (once again) for individual freedom.
