The show was first announced with a series order in November 2025. It hailed from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Martin Gero, who was a writer on 'Stargate SG-1' and 'Stargate: Atlantis' early in his career.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Amazon execs were concerned that Gero's take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise's already dedicated fanbase.
Still seeking that elusive mOdErn aUdiEnce! Instead, Amazon is thinking of handing the series to "someone who does not have history with it and would give it a fresh new perspective."

Actually Roddenberry was partly sidelined, he wasn’t the executive producer/ showrunner. And after the first season stepped back some, then when his health started declining he stepped back a lot. And that was a good thing, his “no conflicts” directive was the bane of the writers room. There’s a difference between idea and execution.
And in the modern world where anything new has to also compete with the back catalog a reboot needs to differentiate itself. They’ve got 17 seasons combined of original Stargate, that orange has been juiced. And anybody that loves that Stargate will watch that. And those fans just keep getting older and fewer.
Hes right. SGU really sucked. Atlantis was already leaning a bit too far into attempting to convey certain messages. Each has been worse than the one before. This one is going to have to be spectacular right out of the gate to bring everyone back.
