Any discussion of leadership change in Tehran appears to be out.
CAIRO (AP) — A deal appears to be emerging between the United States and Iran to end the war and open the Strait of Hormuz, and U.S. President Donald Trump over the weekend said it had been “largely negotiated.”
It is not clear when or how the deal might be finalized and when its various parts will take effect. Trump spoke after calls with allies in the Middle East, including a separate call with Israel. Details come from two regional officials and a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations.
Here’s what we know and don’t know:
The war would end
In the 12 weeks since the U.S. and Israel launched the war with attacks on Iran that killed senior officials including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Tehran has insisted that any deal focus on ending the fighting on all fronts. That includes Lebanon, where the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group has been fighting Israel since two days into the war.
A fragile ceasefire has held since April 7. An end to the war would ease concerns throughout a region that saw Gulf havens and travel hubs like the United Arab Emirates struck by Iranian missiles and drones. It would allow for global shipping, including an estimated 20% of the world's oil and natural gas, to begin flowing through the Strait of Hormuz again. It also would allow the rebuilding of energy and other infrastructure in the region.
Both regional officials said the draft deal includes an end to the war between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as a commitment to not interfere in the domestic affairs of countries in the region including Iran. That’s a critical reference...

The President is a brilliant man. Why does he think the Iranians would ever negotiate in good faith?
The height of my optimism occurred when they initially started annihilating the Iranians leaders. It’s been slowly downhill since.
The Iranians were asking themselves the same question about Trump when he sent Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to negotiate with them.
I think inviting them to negotiations and then blowing them up when they got there might have something to do with it.
What war?
You won the internet today with this one.
Print this post and frame it (or at least hang it up on your refrigerator).
He doesn’t care. He’s not even negotiating. He just wants to markets to stop panicking.
(To be clear, I'm not suggesting that either man is duplicitous, only that neither has the necessary wherewithal to conduct these negotiations on our behalf.)
“The President is a brilliant man. Why does he think the Iranians would ever negotiate in good faith?”
Why do you think that the President thinks that the Iranians would negotiate in good faith?
Trump admin declares ‘no dust, no dollars’ for Iran — Islamic Republic must give up nuclear material before sanctions relief
The stock markets are a record levels right now.
So are the gas prices and inflation.
In other words...
No consequential change of any kind.
Destroying the barbaric IRGC leadership was the ONLY reason to risk a war.
Completely amazing that the USA got out with just 13 fatalities.
And the financial cost was reasonable - like $100 billion or so?
The Down Side to come?
The Political Right is completely demoralized.
The Political Left is super energized.
The 2026 Mid-Term Election is just five months away.
“The Political Right is completely demoralized.”
They may be demoralized but they know there isn’t any alternative and not voting is not a sane choice.
Why does he think the Iranians would ever negotiate in good faith?
why do you think he thinks that?
So are the gas prices (wrong, plus diesel has fallen a buck where I am at. drops every day)
and inflation. (Eh, if we just ignore the 9% from the biden years you might (not) be on to something)
The geopolitical, fallout should we fail to contain Iran, will be far greater than that of a single election in the US. Regionally, Iran would benefit, but globally China would be the big winner.
Reports are saying the deal is 95% done.
You weren’t around in the 70s when we had double digit inflation and interest rates. They would have sacrificed their children for today’s inflation/interest rates.
