(The Daily Caller)—A United Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing Thursday after an incident involving an unruly passenger.
The individual attempted to open a plane door at 36,000 feet and assaulted another passenger, the New York Post reported. The flight took off from Newark Liberty International Airport and was headed to Guatemala City when it had to make an unanticipated landing less than two hours after departure.
United Airlines Flight 1551 landed safely at Washington Dulles International Airport around 8:30 p.m. local time Thursday after the crew reported a passenger disturbance, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight had 145 passengers and six crew members on board, and no injuries were reported in the incident, United Airlines said in a statement sent to the DCNF.
The flight was canceled, with a replacement flight added for Friday morning, and customers were provided overnight accommodations, United Airlines told the DCNF in a statement.
Additional details about what led to the incident have not been released, ABC reported.
Passengers who are unruly can face legal action and civil penalties up to $43,658 per violation. Passengers may face criminal charges for disruptive or violent behavior, the FAA told the DCNF in a statement.
Over 600 unruly passenger incidents have occurred so far in 2026, according to the FAA’s website.

Aviation Ping!...................
You might try but you ain’t gonna open it.
Thousands of monkeys couldn’t open it.............
“The individual attempted to open a plane door at 36,000 feet and assaulted another passenger, the New York Post reported.” A bucket list?
THIS is exactly why we need another Spirit Airlines. Public transportation is no place for zoo animals.
Only as long as all of the nuts and bolts are installed in the door frame.
(Am I permitted to wonder about why “no details are available” on the demographics of the “unruly passenger”? Race, sex, body weight, hair colored, nbr of piercings, degree of inebriation, FWDEI (Flying While DEI/0 etc.)
Maybe they heard the song “Eight Miles High” on their earphones and got carries away.
It’s a song written by Roger McGuinn of the Byrds about both the band’s flight to England and drug experimentation.
Seven miles high, and when you touch down
You’ll find that it’s stranger than known
Agreed....I get the protocol is to set down ASAP if this is attempted but the built in design of the aircraft prohibits the door from ever being successfully opened at that speed and altitude.
Not
8 Miles High?
What about 6?
I am not joking. There needs to be a door installed where these individuals can open it within an enclosed compartment and be subsequently self-evacuated at an altitude of 7 miles (or at whatever mile level they wish. Close the door and ask if anyone else feels the immediate need to self-depart.
Exactly...
Plane headed to Guatemala; maybe the passenger was self-deporting and had a change of mind?
That’s what Cessnas are for...............
