Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth tried his hand at an impression of President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in northern Kentucky on Monday, May 18.
When he first offered me this job, he said, ‘Pete, you’re gonna have to be tough as ----,' ” Hegseth said in Trump’s voice, pausing for applause and laughter from the crowd in Hebron, Ky. “'They’re gonna come after ya.' ”
Switching back to his own voice, Hegseth said, “And boy, was he right.”
Hegseth made the comments while speaking at a campaign rally for Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL challenging Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s Republican primary on Tuesday, May 19. While Trump has endorsed Gallrein’s bid to unseat Massie, a frequent critic of the president, it is highly unusual for a serving defense secretary to campaign for a political candidate.
Hegseth, whose appearance at the rally was met with raucous applause and chants of “USA!” urged voters to elect Gallrein, whom he said would help along Trump’s agenda in Congress. In announcing his campaign last fall, Gallrein promised to “stand shoulder to shoulder” with the president if he is elected.

Hegseth actually did a pretty good job of mimicking the President. It was funny!
