Los Angeles public libraries are being overwhelmed by violence, drug use and homelessness with frightened families and librarians saying once-safe community spaces are often no-go zones.
Even enforcement measures designed to control disruptive behavior are now buckling under the strain.
Temporary Suspension Letters — which ban unruly patrons from all library branches — have surged nearly 90% from 369 in 2023 to 700 suspensions in 2025.
A California Post review of 911 logs obtained through a public records request found the emergency call outs were for assaults, criminal threats, drug use, theft, mental health crises and trespassing.
And reported incidents at libraries have skyrocketed by nearly 135% — from 979 cases in 2020 to a staggering 2,300 in 2025.
From the flagship Los Angeles Central Library in Downtown LA, to affluent Brentwood Branch Library and South Los Angeles, police officers are being dispatched to arrest the criminals involved.
The Post witnessed the crisis firsthand at Central Library in Downtown LA on Friday.
More than 100 homeless people were gathered inside and outside the building.
Many occupied public computers, while others clustered near entrances, some openly using drugs.

Looted? Ptobably only the computers. And the wiring. Books are safe unless there’s a serious cold snap.
What are their favorite books and magazines?
I witnessed a showdown 2 months ago between library staff and a very unruly woman street-person. This was in a very small-town library. I can’t imagine the scale of this problem in LA.
LOL!
Maybe put this issue into Spencer Pratts attack ads. They are already pretty good though.
Leo Tolstoy War and Peace and Cracked
A wide range of choices.
“Temporary Suspension Letters — which ban unruly patrons from all library branches....”
IOW - NOTHING of substance is being done....
I wonder whom these librarians voted for.
Democrats are Evil Corp.
The address on one of the letters was “Blue and orange tent on the east side of Maerling Drive 2500 block “
I noticed the same thing fifty years ago at the big library in another city. What once was a nice library to go to, after the mental hospitals were closed, the crazies dumped on the streets, AND the vagrancy laws done away with, that nice library was suddenly filled with bums sleeping off their drunks in all the comfortable chairs, in air conditioned comfort. It got so bad that library had to close for a while due to ....BEDBUGS.
What was once FREE MUSEUMS in the city suddenly started requiring an entrance fee to keep the bums out.
Bingo
But, but, but...
...I thought that these were the ‘unhoused/hungry’ for whom the checker was begging for donations at the grocery store yesterday? /s/s/s

Libraries?
Places for democrats to damage the culture? If it’s not criminals it’s drag queens pushing themselves on children..
Books are cheap downloads in our time - close down the library system. Chalk it up to one more institution democrats ruined.
The underlying story — The ruling class of LA has repudiated civilization and try to be safe in their haciendas.
Most likely the rat party.
I was at my local library yesterday and it was nice and quiet. No vagrants or deadbeats, which is normal. But one of the librarians was overweight and had purple hair. I have no doubt as to how she votes. The other one looked more normal but her hairstyle and the glasses she wore led me to believe she votes the same way.
Libraries are where the homeless go to poop and shave.
