More hell for California parents as major school district quietly plots mass closures without telling board

San Francisco public school officials’ sneaky new plan for massive school closures was hidden even from the district’s furious school board, according to a new report.

The San Francisco Unified School District plans to close an unidentified number of schools by 2030 to deal with some 14,000 empty seats in the rapidly shrinking district, according to a memo sent to parents last month.

Like other urban districts in California and across the country, the City by the Bay has seen years of enrollment declines in public schools which reflect declining birth rates and other demographic changes blamed on rising prices, migratory shifts and more.

Superintendent Maria Su is expected to announce the outline and timeline for the school closures tomorrow at the district’s school board meeting, but members of the board told a local publication they’re peeved a newspaper caught wind of the story before they did.

Su broke the news of the upcoming closures in a San Francisco Chronicle story published nearly two weeks ago by longtime education reporter Jill Tucker.

“We are ready for this,” Su told the paper of her plan to close schools. “And it’s about time. We’ve been trying to do this for many years now.”

The article states that Su spent the past 18 months getting the district ready for closures, but it doesn’t say why she’s only gone public with the plan recently, or why she gave the news to the paper before she shared it with the board.

Is the school board truly surprised?
Seems like the so-called “surprise” might allow some political cover for when they run for re-election.

I’m thinking that Capt Renault may be “Shocked! Shocked to find that gambling is going on here!”

So, do they also reduce the school budget?

Here in the Florida panhandle, we are losing two elementary schools. This is on top of the ones that have closed in the last few decades. There’s even rumors of a middle school to be closed next year. .....

Interesting that the schools have programmed their own demise into the children. With more than a generation of pro-gay brainwashing behind them, those kids are now the adult population of child-bearing age.

San Francisco Board of Education, the district serves approximately 50,046 students across 122 schools

And there are 14,000 seats empty at those 122 schools.

They’ve closed two elementary schools and two middle schools here. One of each in the poor section and middle class sections of town. No closures in the rich part of town. (Note most residential construction is occurring in the parts of town where the schools were closed.)

SF spends about $1.3 billion per year to teach 50,000 kids or $26,000 per kid.

We are seeing some of the same things here in Scottsdale, AZ.
A very quiet combining of schools.

LOL

"...enrollment declines...reflect declining birth rates and other demographic changes blamed on rising prices, migratory shifts and more."

"More"...needles, bums, crumbling buildings, woke indoctrination, gay indoctrination, "transing" your kid without even telling you, ending "talented and gifted" programs...you name it, it cause people to flee with their kids.

SF has a far bigger problem than just the schools. Families don't want to live there.

Could be deportations causing this ... happening around the Houston area, too.

Anyone with kids STILL in public schools needs a louder wake up call.

California has plenty to offer. Unfortunately, few can afford the price (both in dollars and principles.)

The number of students is declining but the number of teachers and administrators are probably increasing. As is the budget.

Why are public schools incapable of advance planning for demographic changes? Aren’t these self-proclaimed “educators” always the smartest people in the room? I’m so sick of incompetent public schools squandering taxpayer money.

The article likely leaves out another factor.

Private K-12 schooling has been on an increase:

High Enrollment Rate: Approximately 1 in 3 San Francisco K-12 students attends private school.

Expansion: A “private school construction boom” is underway, with at least nine campuses undergoing or planning expansions, including schools like St. Ignatius College Preparatory.

Sector Shifts: While Catholic K-8 schools have seen declining enrollment, some Catholic high schools (e.g., Riordan, Sacred Heart Cathedral) and other non-Catholic schools have experienced growth.
