State Department to revoke passports of parents owing more than $2,500 in child support

WASHINGTON (TNND) — The State Department announced that it will revoke the passports of parents who owe more than $2,500 in child support payments.

"Any American with significant child support debt should arrange payment to the relevant state or states now to prevent passport revocation," the State Department's spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

"Once a passport is revoked, it may no longer be used for travel. Eligibility for a new passport will only be restored after child support debt is paid to the relevant state child support enforcement agency and the individual is no longer delinquent according to [Health and Human Services Department] records."

The basis for the passport condition is the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996, which allows the secretary of state to revoke or limit passports from people with significant child support debt, The Hill reported.

HHS told The Associated Press on Thursday that the passport revocations would begin Friday and target those who owe $100,000 or more, which would be about 2,700 Americans.

It is unclear how many passport holders owe more than $2,500 because HHS is still collecting data from state agencies, but officials said that it could include many more thousands of people.

Until the State Department's announcement, only people who applied to renew their passports were subject to the penalty for unpaid child support. Pursuant to the new policy, HHS will inform the State Department of all past-due payments of more than $2,500.

California did threatened to withhold welfare from single moms who didn't rat out the dad so CA could grab payments.

Many lied, and perfectly innocent men had their paychecks garnished, accounts frozen, etc.

Stop paying welfare to women who have children out of wedlock and the problem is solved.

Courts will enforce visitation orders. Failure to pay child support can result in the custodial parent having to request government assistance of one form or another.

'Deadbeat parents are already restricted on driver’s license, hunting license, and fishing license renewals'

Usually all state issues, same for child support.

Lots of laws on the books that haven't been enforced by the Feds. I expect the next regime will do such as well.

Just another weaponization of government against the more productive members of society.

Da'Quan with 16 baby mama's who's never paid child support? Doesn't matter, he's never left the south side of Chicago so doesn't have or need a passport.

Dave the airline pilot whose wife slept with half the neighborhood while he was away on his week long international trips and stuck him with child support for a kid that isn't biologically his? Take away his passport so he can't work.

Yeah - they’ll enforce alright. Right after you spend 10s of thousands of dollars in attorney fees, missed work for hearings, etc, and only get to recoup pennies on the dollar; if you're lucky. Ask me how I know.

Is this what the Founders envisioned as the role of the Federal Government?

I'm sure there are a great many issues facing this nation that the founders didn't envision.

I remain amazed at FReepers who comment first and only sometimes read the news story.

I don't It's a FReep tradition.

Why get the facts, when you can take the opportunity to vent your spleen.

Suppose the parent needs to go overseas to take a lucrative job that he couldn’t get in America and would enable him to catch up on all child support payments?

Suppose the parent had taken the opportunity to work with the court system so that they didn't get behind in their CS payments in the first place?

I mean, we're only talking about their own children whom they're short-changing. NO biggie, right?

I met a poor guy who was married and had 4 kids. He had a good job and made a fare wage. His job required overtime and he worked his but off. Wife divorced him and screwed him royally through the courts. She lives like a queen and he suffers through life in a small apartment. He still works the same job putting in punishing hours of overtime to try to stay afloat. No wonder young men want nothing to do with marriage.

Perhaps it would be in order for young men like that to think with the head on their shoulders instead of the one between their legs?

No one forced him into that situation. He willingly walked into it with his eyes wide open.

Interesting how a working dad who made like $45,000 a year has to pay like $50,000 a year for child support.

How about going after these welfare queens with 15 kids with 15 different daddies- DNA tests all around in order to get benefits.

They know who they slept with, who the potential fathers might be so if they don’t give it up, no welfare. I am sick of paying for other’s responsibilities.

So you marry a woman, for better or worse. Work together and have 1,2,3,4 kids and suddenly the wife decides she’s better off with the kids and Texas child support. The man has no say in the matter. State law has him shackled to paying the woman till youngest kid is adult and he may be required to pay for idiot college and insurance until the spawn is 26. Best bet is to get clipped and forgo reproduction.

“State law has him shackled to paying the woman till youngest kid is adult “

It is called child support, not wife support.
