State Department to revoke passports of parents owing more than $2,500 in child support

WASHINGTON (TNND) — The State Department announced that it will revoke the passports of parents who owe more than $2,500 in child support payments.

"Any American with significant child support debt should arrange payment to the relevant state or states now to prevent passport revocation," the State Department's spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

"Once a passport is revoked, it may no longer be used for travel. Eligibility for a new passport will only be restored after child support debt is paid to the relevant state child support enforcement agency and the individual is no longer delinquent according to [Health and Human Services Department] records."

The basis for the passport condition is the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996, which allows the secretary of state to revoke or limit passports from people with significant child support debt, The Hill reported.

HHS told The Associated Press on Thursday that the passport revocations would begin Friday and target those who owe $100,000 or more, which would be about 2,700 Americans.

It is unclear how many passport holders owe more than $2,500 because HHS is still collecting data from state agencies, but officials said that it could include many more thousands of people.

Until the State Department's announcement, only people who applied to renew their passports were subject to the penalty for unpaid child support. Pursuant to the new policy, HHS will inform the State Department of all past-due payments of more than $2,500.

Is this what the Founders envisioned as the role of the Federal Government?

Liberals will abuse this to imprison their political enemies, mark my words. Alex Jones owes something like the GDP of Texas due to some nonsense jury verdict, now he can’t go anywhere. Dangerous precedent.

for crying out loud. Can’t our Dept. of State find anything more important than this? I KNOW of a couple of cases where men were ordered by the court to pay child support for children whom they have proven they are not the biological father. Given the morals of many women these days and the intelligence of many judiciary, that is an assinine policy!

i have to admit that I am not comfortable with this

and no, i owe nothing

passport should be a right, not conditioned on one’s finances or whatever.

if someone owes money, send it to collection agency

American females have a lot of their lives overwatched by government, whether at work or dating, or a marriage, groceries or rent, no matter what they always have a friendly government standing beside them, almost like a partnership, even in the military they seem to have a special relationship with the powers that be.

Good thing my ex-wife eventually paid me her past due child support.

But I'm uncomfortable with the federal government, especially the State Department, taking on the role of examining our finances for being able to go to-and-fro.

I think ths is virtue signaling. My wife and I raised her niece and nephew. Their deadbeat doper father was on the other side of the country gig working for cash. The kids Mom. who had her own drug problems, never saw dime one. And I’d be shocked if any of the deadbeats I’ve known even had a passport. They’re not the kind to go to Gstaad for the winter. Now taking their Drivers License. Now you’re talking. Although if I recall correctly the kids Dad was driving on a revoked license anyway.

State Department?

Sounds like Crooked Hillary or Frenchy Kerry is still in charge.

You say they’re not in charge anymore.

Rubio is in charge.

Isn’t he Pope Leo’s boy?

I’d be shocked if they really went through with it. Maybe they just announced to scare some into paying up.

This law was passed in the 1990s. It just hasn’t been well-enforced.

The kids can’t become a public charge.

My friends the solution is simple. ID the FATHER of every newborn. Then garnish the first $200 of his wages monthly. Will that be enough if the parents separate? Let’s just say it’s a start. You know records keeping.

It’s cheaper ta keep her.
Heard it somewhere.

Trump accounts. Let’s say that at 59 years of age a guy’s been successful enough to grow his account but did enough bad things in life to owe society for whatever reason. He’ll be too old to commit crimes but live in one of those SRO hotels in the Robert Cray song with the words “I’m So Mad”. Find out what should be subtracted from the account ans ask what he’s gonna do about it.

I’d like to see any single mom receiving state child support be required to submit dna to find the father/s and make them pay…
