Slouching Towards Civil War
Gates of Vienna ^ | 27 Apr, 2026 | Baron Bodissey with excerpts from Daniel Greenfield

Posted on 04/28/2026 8:57:58 AM PDT by MtnClimber

I’ve been convinced for quite some time that the political polarization of America has passed the point of no return. At this stage there seems to be no political solution to the problem. To be blunt about it: there is no voting our way out of this.

Where political matters are concerned, the hard Left — which seems to occupy a larger and larger portion of the Democrat Party — has all but cornered the market on violent, incendiary rhetoric. If you disagree with them, you should be beaten up and imprisoned. If you oppose the Narrative, you need to be put up against the wall and shot.

Republican responses to the Democrats’ at-your-throat fighting style are generally weak dishwater. The mainstream Right has always been reluctant to play hardball with their progressive adversaries, but at this point regular hardball will no longer suffice. A harder ball is required, one that would lead to a situation that most of us would rather not contemplate. It’s hard to imagine any Republicans being willing to pick up that ball.

As I said above, there is no voting our way out of this.

Daniel Greenfield has posted a useful overview of the situation. Some excerpts are below:

Party of Assassins

The latest Trump assassin wasn’t a radical. He was a Democrat.

by Daniel Greenfield

There was nothing radical about Cole Tomas Allen: the attempted White House Correspondents’ Dinner assassin. Allen’s manifesto reads a lot like that of the previous three-named assassin Ryan Wesley Routh who was stalking President Trump at a golf game.

Apart from the explicit murder plots, there is nothing in Routh’s ‘Dear World’ letter and Allen’s manifesto that you wouldn’t find in the Washington Post, a Jimmy Kimmel or Stephen Colbert monologue or a rant by a Democrat member of Congress. Routh was obsessed with Iran and Ukraine, sounding like Thomas Friedman when he complained that Trump had “ended relations with Iran like a child and now the Middle East has unraveled.”

Allen offered even more generic foreign policy criticisms that seemed plucked from network newscasts and fake news coverage of Trump’s campaign against illegal alien criminals, drug cartels, Islamic terrorists in Iran and the cutoff of funds to USAID, ranting about being (“raped in a detention camp”, “fisherman executed without trial” “schoolkid blown up” or “a child starved”).

Did Allen really care about events in Iran or Latin America? Could he even tell them apart?

There’s a vagueness to the litany that suggests Allen had a weak grip on where these supposed things were even happening and what the connection to it was beyond justifying his attack.

Rather than Marxism, Routh and Allen offered tepid shopworn liberalism as their justification for murder, “U.S presidents must at bare minimum embody the moral fabric that is America and be kind, caring and selfless and always stand for humanity” and “the United States of America are ruled by the law, not by any one or several people. In so far as representatives and judges do not follow the law, no one is required to yield them anything so unlawfully ordered.”

This is the stuff of a Ken Burns op-ed and it shows that both men were more influenced by liberal Trump Derangement Syndrome media products than by Antifa or radical groups.

Allen slurs President Trump as a “pedophile, rapist and traitor”. This line is so commonplace in liberal circles that you can find it all across Bluesky, where the attempted assassin had an account, sold on t-shirts and popping up in op-eds. Social media personalities, talk show hosts and members of Congress have used similar rhetoric to refer to the 47th president.

There’s not much of a political critique. Just a grab bag of lines from MSNBC.

[…]

Allen and Routh’s views were generally those of mainstream liberal Democrats. They were no more extreme than your average MSNBC viewer. Probably even a smidgen more moderate.

And they were probably no more radical than the average committed Democrat.

The only difference between the two assassins and the rest of their political movement was that they didn’t just buy t-shirts calling for Trump’s murder (Amazon has a Google search result ‘Trump Dead Shirt’ to cash in on this trend) or put up ‘Is He Dead Yet’ signs on their lawns or confine themselves to fulminating on social media… they did something about it.

That doesn’t make them more radical than the average Democrat. Just more serious.

[…]

The Democrats have become a party of assassins, willing to shoot President Trump, members of the Secret Service and anyone else, and most of all, to shoot America in the head, because they have been brainwashed into believing the rhetoric of their party and their media.

When you believe that the president is Hitler 2.0, then shooting him becomes reasonable.

The fault certainly lies with men like Allen and Routh who let themselves be brainwashed, but it also lies with a party whose officials and media have spent a decade pouring that poisonous rhetoric into the ears of the nation for their own political gain all the while knowing it was a lie.

Now after several assassinations, the killing of Charlie Kirk and numberless incidents of street violence, and murderous attacks on ICE and other federal law enforcement, they have not repented. They formally condemn violence and day after day they make the case to men like Routh and Allen why Trump should be removed from office by any and every means possible.

Their only possible defense is that they don’t expect their followers to take them seriously.

But the record number of assassinations shows that they have created a party of assassins. Those who have created a party of assassins bear the ultimate responsibility for the violence.

A Party of Assassins cannot offer America anything except murder, treason and death.

"If it ever does come to an 1861-style civil war, it has to come from state leadership, not just ordinary schmoes."

Not once does Bodissey say "CWII" or any of those phrases which trigger soup cans like you. Furthermore, Bodissey references the original post from Daniel Greenfield, which never once uses the term "civil", but suggests -- to your unliking, although you haven't read it -- that the Democrats are composed of an unstable populace that have been activated into an asymmetrical war against Republicans.

Or did you somehow miss that Charlie Kirk was assassinated by the boyfriend of a leftist furry f@ggot exactly 6 months after this Politico article describing how the Big Money spent to compel Democrats to this exact moment in time we are discussing politely -- the third attempt against President Trump's existence -- was published.

"Now, Democrats are seeking to bottle up their impolite words and serve them up the maw of an increasingly coarse and foul-tongued populace.

“Some of it is genuine, some of it is people trying to seem faux-edgy authentic,” said Lis Smith, the Democratic adviser whose profanity is so legendary that her f-bombs played a hand in earning Amazon’s otherwise wholesome documentary on Pete Buttigieg in 2021 an “R” rating. “If the first time you’ve used a cuss word in public is reading off a script, it’s probably not authentic and not something you should do.”

It’s also become part of Democrats’ increased social media strategy. After posting their “shit that ain’t true” videos on social media, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made one “breaking down the BS Trump told” during his joint address. (The top Senate Democrat didn’t go as far as saying bullshit in the video though — opting instead for “bull.”)

It is not always working. Last month, when Democrats joined federal workers at a rally of the American Federation of Government Employees to protest DOGE cuts, the profanities nearly rivaled those gathered.

“I don’t swear in public very well, but we have to fuck Trump,” said Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-Ore.), adding, “Please don’t tell my children that I just did that.”

The awkward formulation — which landed less like a diss and more like a proposition — was roundly mocked.

“The key to doing it and doing it well is that you can’t overdo it and you can’t force it,” said Caitlin Legacki, a Democratic campaign veteran. “If elected officials are going to cuss, they have to mean it. If it’s authentic to who they are and how they’re feeling, voters will probably be fine with it and even relate to it. But if it’s not authentic, there’s nothing more cringeworthy.

“Democrats who think that vulgarity and dehumanization are reliable, appropriate or beneficial ways to advance their political interests profoundly misunderstand what has happened in our politics and what is required in this moment,” said Michael Wear, Barack Obama’s former faith outreach adviser and the founder, president and CEO of the Center for Christianity and Public Life, and author of “The Spirit of Our Politics.” “These are not tools that can be used in the service of any political goals. These things promote the very distrust, estrangement and animosity which is the fuel for the reckless, antagonistic politics Democrats — and all of us — ought to reject.

Crockett’s f-bomb got some attention back in her district. She said at the Capitol on Thursday that people called the pastor at her church to “tattle” on her. (Though Crockett added her pastor said he approved her message: “He’s not going to be the one to try to rein me in.”)

For now, she is unrepentant. She said her answer was “real” and reflected her frustration with Trump and Musk’s actions.

“Like I have a potty mouth, especially when I’m mad,” she said. “We’re working on it. We’re going to pray about it.”

So you take your lame strawman attempt and cram it right up your juxy, and you take your nimrod hall monitor with you.

Trump has pledged for years Iran would not have the bomb under his watch.

He also said No New Pointless Wars in the Middle East. That was his campaign promise many people (especially young people) believe he broke.

Just asking, what is your plan for the crazed mullahs having nuclear tipped ICBMs and thinking it is Allah’s will for them to destroy the Great Satan?” Do you think they would be too Christian not to act?

Yeah sure, Iran is weeks away from getting a nuclear bomb since 1992.

We didn't have to do anything, the Ayatollah's son was a living version of of the prince in the movie Braveheart, he would have destroyed the country all by himself. Plus Iran (and most countries in the ME) is rapidly running out of water.

Well, somebody must have missed their nap today.

Not once does Bodissey say "CWII" or any of those phrases which trigger soup cans like you. Furthermore, Bodissey references the original post from Daniel Greenfield, which never once uses the term "civil",

The literal title of this author's article is Slouching Towards Civil War. If you think that's overly-dramatic, blame him, not me.

He folloe up his title by them saying:

I’ve been convinced for quite some time that the political polarization of America has passed the point of no return. At this stage there seems to be no political solution to the problem. To be blunt about it: there is no voting our way out of this.

So he first uses the phrase "civil war", then doubles down on that concept by saying voting/elections cannot solve this. Gee, what do you think he is suggesting?

He then goes on to say:

Republican responses to the Democrats’ at-your-throat fighting style are generally weak dishwater.

So all I did was ask the rather obvious question. If we truly are "Slouching towards civil war", and "there is no voting our way out of this", exactly what tangible. concrete actions are we supposed to take?

But apparently, neither you nor the author want to answer that question.

“He also said No New Pointless Wars in the Middle East. That was his campaign promise many people (especially young people) believe he broke.”

Pointless?? And you think you can assess the millions of young people and know how they think?

Broke his promise? How do you think he could carry out his campaign promise that Iran would never achieve a nuclear weapon under his watch?

So you can’t answer what we will do with crazed mullahs believing Allah wants them to vaporize American cities?

“Yeah sure, Iran is weeks away from getting a nuclear bomb since 1992.”

I have heard that from stupid people from months. Iranian leaders, themselves, boasted to Americans that they were close. And not being stupid people, since American universities educate their scientists, they would have.

“We didn’t have to do anything, the Ayatollah’s son was a living version of of the prince in the movie Braveheart, he would have destroyed the country all by himself.”

Trump cannot react to world affairs with fantasies like that you pull from your ass. The mullahs would have offed him before he got started.

“Plus Iran (and most countries in the ME) is rapidly running out of water.”

Which is probably why they were in a hurry to develop the bomb.

My first response to you got cut-off, but it's just reiterating the same question I've been asking:

Assuming everything you say is true, exactly what do you expect us to do about? In concrete, real-world terms.

Because if we answer it the fact that it is already on will become crystal clear. The same thing will happen when a leftist mass casualty event takes place. The destruction of a leftist journo, politician or influencer will be all the catalyst the left needs to make it all go boom. Does anyone believe the unhinged will be as restrained as the right has been? Meanwhile the Republican "leadership" continues to whistle past the graveyard instead of acting to legally incarcerate James Carville. So we wait, and grow older.

Unlike the 1st CW that nobody wanted, the left is drooling for a revolution.

What does that even mean? Why wouldn't you want your point to be crystal clear?

See to me, this article and most of the responses boil down to, as Freeper Fury put it, "keyboard bravado". Personally, I can't stand it when leftist say ridiculous, over-the-top things just for effect. Some call it "catastrophizing". But I can't stand it when people on the right do the same thing .

What ever happened to saying exactly what you mean, without hyperbole, braggadocio, and with a reasonable view of the current state of reality?

Let's go back to that.

If it is going to happen, better to force the issue while the GOP is in control. Insurrection Act. Military tribunals.

But the heavy lifting has to come from the states.

......

Fight back? Tit for tat?

Tear up the streets with riots and protests whenever our own are killed.

Remove the DAs and judges from their posts.

Remove soros and his git

Go after antifa. They are in. Most every state.

Protest hard at leftist schools and take them over...

Need I go on?

Our side has the guns

And their side controls the power grid. Going to be a long walk through areas with no power, and no running water, to get to the gunfight you fantasize about. And an even longer walk back home.

Assuming the other side will consent to fighting the war on terms that guarantee your victory is not smart.

So you're saying that Republicans should go into Democrat-controlled cities, and riot? Democrats aren't stupid enough to riot in suburban or rural areas controlled by Republicans and conservative police forces and judges. We'd be idiots to go inside the cities controlled by Democrats because then the police and judges actually would crack down. But hey, feel free to go into South Chicago or Portland and riot!

Remove the DAs and judges from their posts. Remove soros and his git. How? The people in those blue cities/areas will keep electing left-wong DA's and courts. And how do you "remove" Soros?

Go after antifa. They are in. Most every state.

The DOJ is prosecuting them every chance they get. Other than prosecuting them, how to you propose to "go after" them, hold up in their blue cities?

Protest hard at leftist schools and take them over...

Conservatives will always be outnumbered at those schools, and exactly how are we supposed to "take them over"? Best we can try to do is remove funding in red States. But otherwise they're funded by Blue state governments.

Quite the opposite. Overwhelmingly power and water are generated in Red areas far away from Blue cities. In fact, who needs a gun fight, just turn the power and water off to their cities and they will fall apart and turn on each within days.
