The Indo-Aryans of the Middle East [13:16]
YouTube ^ | April 23, 2026 | Jack of All Languages

In the ancient Mitanni Kingdom, an Indo-Aryan language very closely related to Sanskrit was used by the ruling class -- but only for very special occasions... Jack of All Languages explores the surprising linguistic links between ancient Indo-Aryan terms found in Syrian horse training manuals and early Sanskrit. By analyzing archaeological tablets and royal treaties, this investigation sheds light on how a prestige language influenced elite cultures in the Middle East centuries before the oldest known Vedic texts were composed.

Mitanni was the Kingdom of the Medes, but the conventional pseudochronology turns these kinds of similarities and connections seem mysterious. They're not. BTW, Jack talks with one hand.
One of *those* topics.

I used to think the Mitanni are an earlier branch of Indo-European like the Hittites.

But you are right, the Mitanni ruling elite were Proto-Indo-Aryan. https://indroyc.com/2025/06/01/vedic-influence-in-ancient-middle-east-hurrians-to-mitanni/#:~:text=A%20%E2%80%9CSuperstrate%E2%80%9D%20Elite%2C%20Not,practice%20their%20own%20indigenous%20traditions.

In the treaty between the Hittites and Mitanni (c. 1380 BCE), the Mitanni kings invoke the gods Indra, Mitra, Varuna, and the Nasatyas—the core pantheon of the Vedas.

189. The treaties of Subliliumas with Azaru of Damascus, with a patricide prince of Mitanni, and with the widow of Tirhaka, make plausible his identity with Shamash Shum Ukin. This would signify also that Nabopolassar was a son of Shamash Shum Ukin.

190. The people and the kingdom of Mitanni did not "disappear" in the thirteenth century. Mitanni is another name for Medes; the northwest part of Medes retained this name as Matiane (Herodotus).

191. Mursilis of the Boghazkoi texts (Merosar of the Egyptian texts), also known as Bijassili, is Nabopolassar of the Babylonian texts, Belesys of Diodorus or Bussalossor of Abydenos. Bel-shum-ishkun is another name of Nabopolassar.

192. The annals of Nabopolassar from his tenth until his seventeenth year (now in the British Museum), can be supplemented by the "Hittite" annals of his from the first to the tenth year (two variants) and from the nineteenth year on, as they survived in the Boghazkoi archive.

193. The presence of the Scythians (Umman-Manda) in Asia Minor, who in the days of Essarhaddon arrived from behind the Caucasus, is also reflected in the Boghazkoi texts dealing with the Umman-Manda.

197. The Median prince and ally of Mursilis-Nabopolassar was his brother-in-law, known in the texts by the name of Mattiuza.

226. The queen of Nebukhadnezar was a daughter of a priest of Ishtar. She was not an Egyptian or Median princess, as related by early authors.

In the days of Assurbanipal's father, Esarhaddon, the Scythians came down from the steppes of Russia and, crossing the Caucasus, arrived at the lake of Urmia. Their king went to the help of Assur-banipal when the Medes and the Babylonians marched against Assyria.(2)

Herodotus(3) narrates that the Scythians descended from the slopes of the Caucasus, battled the Medes who were pressing on Nineveh, and, moving southward, reached Palestine. There they were met by Psammetichos, the pharaoh, who for a long time tarried in Palestine...

Nabopolassar, the Chaldean, was allied with Cyaxares, the king of the Medes and the prince of Damascus; Assurbanipal and after him Sin-shar-ishkun of Assyria were aided by Pharaoh Seti and for some time by the king of the Scythians. Egyptian troops are mentioned for the first time in Napopolassar's year 10 (-616). For many years the fortunes of war changed camps. Then Nabopolassar and Cyaxares, the Mede, brought the Scythians over to their side. Their armies advanced from three sides against Nineveh. In August of the year -612 The dam on the Tigris was breached, and Nineveh was stormed. In a single night the city that was the splendor of its epoch went up in flames, and the centuries-old empire that ceaselessly carried sword and fire to the four quarters of the ancient world—as far as Elam and Lydia, Sarmatia and Ethiopia—ceased to exist forever.

imho the giants of the old testament like Og were were indo european warriors. I’ve checked the genetic components of syrians jordanians and they all have trace elements of the indo europeans not much. that signature vanishes entirely in saudi arabia and egypt.

Only a few of these warriors pushed south. but as with everywhere else they stood at least head and shoulders above the locals. think of pictures of americans in viet nam. the american soldiers towered over the vietnames soldiers. but because of the gun—size of the soldier was not a determining factor in the outcome of battles.

But 5-4 thousand years ago—size gave overwhelming advantage to warriors wielding axes, or swords. Add to that the the indo europeans brought in the horse and the charriot, and the advantage was such that even one warrior could take over a town or region.

For me the big tell is also the pracices of the indo europeans steppe warriors. they raided and killed the local men and took their wives as their own. This happened from india to england. this matches the description of what the bible describes as the sons of god married the daughters of men. they saw that the women were beautiful and conceived children by them. from them came the giants.
