Members of the screenwriters union overwhelmingly ratified a four-year agreement with Hollywood studios and streamers on Friday, bringing an end to a surprisingly smooth and quick process that brought a prolonged strike the last time around.
Union leaders said 90% voted to approve the deal struck between the Writers Guild of America West, Writers Guild of America East and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Studios will now shift to negotiations with actors and directors.
Leaders of the unions emphasized gains in health coverage.
“In the face of industry contraction and runaway health care cost inflation, writers were able to secure a contract that returns our Health Fund to a sustainable path and builds on gains from the 2023 strike,” WGA West President Michele Mulroney (pictured, right) said in a statement.
Guild leaders said the deal also includes minimum pay hikes, especially for comedy and variety writers, with more money in residuals for the re-airing of their work.

Bummer.

Geez, for the love of...
Dont care. Still not going to support their movies with my money.
The Brainless AI could write better garbage than them and they know it ,LOL
The fact is that the guilds and unions in Hollywood are scared crapless by the catastrophic decline in employment and profits for the studios that directly impact their memberships, dues and pension/health insurance contributions. They know that a strike would simply make all these factors worse and don’t dare go that route. The era of strikes in the movie business is over, along with the Hollywood welfare system that spread the wealth around, because the wealth is gone.
It’s basically the rearranging the deck chairs on The Titanic now.
When I was very young, I took a screen writing class from Wells Root at UCLA. Mr. Root was older but sharp as a tack, a great teacher. But NOTHING prepared me for how extraordinarily difficult it is to write a movie script.
I’ve been published by Harper Collins and Prentice Hall Press, which other writers recognize as the best. And spent my life in the publishing business.
Soooo if those yucky looking people can deliver a decent script, they deserve a round of applause and a ton of $$$$$$$$$$$
Dittos......
I make attempts at writing a screenplay and sometimes get somewhere with it.
At one time in my life I thought I could write worth something. I could usually get an A or B on any paper I turned in as long as I was familiar with the subject.
I spent 10 years in public broadcasting as a technical person. 5 of those were for trying to escape.
Not as if they’d be missed. They weren’t missed the last time.
I subscribe to local PBS station. Very nice people work there and their office is fairly close so it’s fun to walk in there with a check even though amount I give them is minimal. Didn’t your station have nice people? And how was the pay?
That’s great! We can now look forward to more crude language, nonsensical storylines and woke politics for another four years!
I wonder if they are feeling the potential heat of AI breathing down their neck.
Honestly, some of the stuff they produce is so bad that I am pretty sure AI would an improvement.
I bet many of them use AI secretly.
Strikes don’t work in a dying industry……
Hollywood lost about 50% of their business because of dei/woke shows. Until they get rid of those in charge of making them then hollywood will continue to lose business.
Yup, hence “Leaders of the unions emphasized gains in health coverage”.
