Iconic rock star Dave Mason, who found fame as the lead singer and co-founder of Traffic, alongside Chris Wood, Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi died on Sunday, April 19, at the age of 79. His family confirmed the news in a statement issued by his rep. No cause of death was revealed, but it read: "On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dave Mason. On Sunday, April 19, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, celebrated songwriter, musician, singer, and author, passed away peacefully at his home in Gardnerville, NV. Dave Mason lived a remarkable life devoted to the music and the people he loved," it touchingly concluded.

Hmmm... I always think of Windwood as the lead singer of traffic.

I remember listening to Traffic on a reel to reel in 68 in Japan. I’ve had a soft spot in the heart for all his work since. RIP music friend; I hope you believed my tagline.

I am 86 and have lost all my golf buddies, many colleagues, all 4 siblings (I was youngest), most cousins etc. It’s the penalty one pays for longevity.

I don't like that video, at all.

This was the real Dave Mason in his latter years. He had lost a lot but still gave what he had to sing his heart out on stage.

Here is an early Mr. Fantasy in 1967 (Dave Mason was a founding member of Traffic and is in this video).

Here is the best live Mr. Fantasy I've heard (1972 live in Santa Monica; obviously Steve Winwood and the band had improved their jam)

Skip any commercials after 10s or so.

I remember seeing Dave when he did a show at Lehigh during my freshman year, so it had to be '77-'78.  If memory serves correct, it was a solo acoustic concert, and he opened for Kenny Loggins.

Thought it was a whiny, annoying tune. Just horrible.

He played acoustic rhythm guitar on the Hendryx cover of “Along the Watchtower”, so he gets cool points for that.

Seeing a booking picture of a man who had obviously been in a fight, I commented that he had his clock cleaned. When asked what that meant, I tried to explain. The 25 year old wouldn’t believe me and thought I made it up. Times change.

I actually have a Bekka Bramlet playlist on my phone. She has backed up and sung duos with an amazing list of people.

Does anyone remember when he called into Rush because he thought it was hilarious that “We Just Disagree” was the “Moderate Song”? LOL!

Same here. Saw him several times for free at local festivals in my area and couldn’t believe I got to see him for nothing. For several years he also played annually at a small venue in my area, and I also happily paid to see him.

Legend.

I do remember that. As was often the case then, I was in my car, headed somewhere for work when Rush was on the air. I remember thinking that it was ironic... Dave Mason was live on talk radio while I was stuck in traffic.

I had a beer with him at a bar in St. Thomas during my honeymoon in 1989. He lived there at the time. Nice guy. He looked like he was pushing 300 lbs then.
