“I remember the story “Gibraltar Falls”, part of Poul Anderson’s Time Patrol work.”
Oooh, I remember that.
Imagine what a site the Zanclean flood would have been had we been around to see it - i.e. when the Atlantic rose to breach the strait of Gibraltar ~ 5 million years ago and refilled the dry salt flats of the evaporated Mediterranean basin. It would have been a waterfall hundreds and not thousands thousands of times greater than Niagara Falls.
Its a great geologic story.
Word to humans: The earth and its climate is and has always been undergoing change. Life’s survival, including humanity, is based on adapting to an ever changing earth.
Oil geologist found massive salt domes in the Gulf of Mexico. They were created maybe 60 million ears ago when Africa seperated from South America and sea water flowed in a like at stone and evaporated
I was 20 and THERE. Don’t remember a lot. Proof I was there.
"I was 20 and THERE. Don’t remember a lot. Proof I was there."
“but
what was the “evidence” found by scientists?”
I thought the evidence that they said was
salt on the sea floor bed.
I would not call that evidence.
Amazing, I had no idea!
The Permian extinction, or even the K-T boundary extinction — much bigger. Bigger than this, not bigger than Led Zep IV.
Thanks, but there wasn’t a genetic bottleneck. It continues to be claimed all over YouTube, but isn’t true. The archaeology shows no discontinuity in human settlements.
Rainbow Bridge, a.k.a., Waiting for Jimi.
The evidence is clearly described, the giant salt deposits are shown early on, and evidence isn’t in quote marks.
Yup, and just just know, millions of prehistoric slackers would be hanging ten, singing “Everybody’s gone surfin’...”
/bingo
This area used to be under the sea, quite a while back. The salt domes trap oil, which Michigan has a little of. A water well driller mentioned that all the wells he drills 7 miles or so west of here are shallow, because if he goes too deep he always hits salt water. That’s been done there a loooong time.
🌜I’m a big impact guy, but I don’t share that view.🌛

So... At least we’re never going to run out of salt?
When I was much younger, I remember reading a story titled “And the Waters Prevailed”, about humans at the time of the filling of the Mediterranean basin. I’m going to check my library’s catalogue and maybe read it again.
Poseidon was the Greek god of the sea; the sea is salty; one of his descriptions was “Poseidon Earthshaker”; salt comes in shakers...
Julian May’s Saga of Pliocene Exile series had the opening of Gibraltar and flooding of the Mediterranean as a major plot point.
