Christopher Nolan made his way to Las Vegas to talk up “The Odyssey,” his historical drama based on Homer’s Greek epic...
“Why ‘The Odyssey?’ ‘The Odyssey’ is a story that has fascinated generation after generation for 3,000 years,” Nolan mused. “It’s not a story. It’s the story.”
Nolan treated exhibitors to an extended look at “The Odyssey,” which opened with Damon’s Odysseus, shirtless on the beach with a burly beard. He’s been gone a long time and admits to Calypso (Charlize Theron) that he “can’t remember anything before Troy.”
Most of the footage revolved around “the story of the horse” — the famous Trojan horse attack, which the Greeks used as cover to enter the city of Troy at the end of the war. As the massive wooden figure washes up on the beach, thousands of men have to pull the Trojan horse out of the water and onto the sand before they can wheel it into the city...
Later, there are shots of Odysseus urging his soldiers to keep rowing through a storm, and then slinging arrows as they launch their full-scale attack in the dark of night. The footage ended with a quick shot of Odysseus and his soldiers as they face the man-eating cyclops Polyphemus; the massive brute picks up a man in his hand before the screen cuts to black. He’s one of many mythical beings — Cyclops, sirens and Circe among them — who Odysseus will encounter as he ventures to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland).
Nolan described a treacherous filming process, which brought them all over the world as they shot across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland and Scotland.
“This has been an absolute nightmare to film — but in all the right ways...We had an amazing time.”

They literally made Helen of Troy black in this movie.
I’ve loved the Iliad and the Odyssey since I was a kid, and I make it a point to watch any movie Christopher Nolan makes, but the casting for this movie sounds terrible. Anne Hathaway? Charlize Theron? Matt Damon - as Odysseus?

I'll make it work. I'll turn this movie into a comedy. I'll emulate Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993).
Set a reminder for when it comes out.
Actually a movie I want to see.
THX
Why don’t they make a movie where a young black super hero keeps assaulting white girls and female judges keep letting him go.
Stuns? I didn’t think that Variety carried Nolan’s water.
It made the Greeks famous for looking for the back door, it still carries that name today.
I thought Damon was perfect in The Martian, he can be very good and appear politics free, Charlize Theron bugs me, she always seems to be taking herself so seriously that she comes off as saying “watch me acting, aren’t I good”.
And yet the article doesn't include this footage.
Agree!
I will not be seeing it!
bttt
My personal favorite is the 1956 version of HELEN OF TROY.
This might get me back to going to the theater. OH WAIT! Our 25 year old six plex theater closed. Last time I went there was 2010 to see the remake of True Grit.
But then, if it is like most movies shown today it will be out on DVD in three months or sooner.
“Memento” blew my mind a little bit...it was the most bizarre way to tell a story I had ever seen, but once I figured it out, I very much admired that originality as well. But I have never been able to recommend that movie to other people.
Loved, ‘Memento.’ Exactly! Another movie that’s hard to wrap your brain around is, ‘Primer’ (2004) about some guys who invent time travel and (I think?) replication in their garage...and all the things that can and do go wrong with it.

I’ve watched it numerous times and there are STILL parts of it that I just don’t get.
I have no desire to see ‘The Odyssey.’ Maybe on DVD in the future. *SHRUG*
Sounds exciting. Unfortunately, we can’t see movies in the theater anymore, because my husband is on supplemental oxygen 24/7, and his portable oxygen concentrator doesn’t last long enough for an epic film. I doubt if the movie theater has electrical outlets for him to plug in the adapter to keep it charging.
Given the woke casting! I won’t be seeing it.
The definitive Odyssey remains the 1997 TV miniseries with Armand Assante as Odysseus. Isabella Rossellini as Athena.
So in the Nolan film golden haired Helen not so much!
Wikipedia hides the casting of Lupita as Helen.
In the Brad Pitt film Troy Diane Kruger fits Homer’s description.
So much for respect for the source!
For real?! Ridiculous. I’m no big Matt Damon fan either but Nolan apparently likes him this is their third flock together.
I think Cheron is an absolute nutcase in real life and given her background - her mother shot her father to death and she has or had a basket-case brother too - maybe she can’t be blamed. But I always find her too cold.
I watch this version once in a while. It still looks great, is close to perfectly cast, has some humor, still wanna slap his stupid crew.
