New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced plans to open the city’s first government-run supermarket in East Harlem next year, a move critics warn could cost taxpayers millions and undercut nearby private grocers.
Mamdani vowed during an address celebrating his first 100 days in office Sunday that the city will have five government-run grocery stores by the end of his first term on Jan. 1, 2030, falling in line with promises made during his campaign.
"I was elected as a Democratic socialist, and I will govern as a Democratic socialist," Mamdani said.
But Daniel Di Martino, a Venezuelan-born fellow at the Manhattan Institute, said Mamdani's plans for government-run grocery stores will fail "like every other socialist experiment" does.
"The city is going to spend a very large amount of money, and they are not going to cater to the needs of the local consumers, because they have no profit incentive," Di Martino said. "Why does the grocery store have the items you want? Because they can make money from things you want. The government grocery store does not care about what you want because they don't care about profits."
In February, Mamdani pushed for $70 million in funding for the Economic Development Corporation to select sites and build five city-run grocery stores — one in each borough. Construction costs for the city's first government grocery store at La Marqueta are estimated at $30 million — half of the project's proposed budget.
"Mamdani says the city is not going to have to pay rent because the place is already owned by the city," Di Martino said. "But there is a cost. It's called an opportunity cost. The city could have rented or sold that location to a private actor, and instead we're going to miss that revenue."

5 stores for a population of 8 million plus...lol
That’s okay. Ayatollah Mamdami will be long gone by then. He said one will open in about a year and the other four will be build around the end of his term. LOL. Probably steal some NYC Golden Eggs and move back to where the hell he came from.
Why build? I’m sure there are plenty of empty buildings.
Over a year to build. I sell grift.
This seems like a pretty easy problem to solve. Why don’t they just pass a law making it illegal for them to fail?
In reality, they’ll just pass a law requiring commercial grocery stores to share their wares (for free, of course).
New York is mostly Democrat, all people
that are moral and decent have left the place.
I say let them go at it!
We will learn lessons most Democrats are
too stupid to learn, most Republicans
already knew, and hopefully some of
our children and grand children will
learn.
“ Don’t do STUPID!”
Will be interesting what groceries they will buy to put in their free store. Very few if any wholesalers will give them lovely fresh fruit and veggies, etc.
Wilted lettuce, rancid oils, smelly leftover meat, ouutdated cans. New Yorkers will be thrilled. Wish a NYC freeper would go down there and check it out, post pictures. Place will, I think, attract illegals, not citizens. But it’s unwise to underestimate the stupidity and greed of anyone.
A central tenet of every socialist:
“This time it will be different.”
But of course it never is.
Anyway, Onward the Revolution!
I guess.
But will be called as a success by educators, the media, and political leaders.
5? If it is such a great idea then open 25. Supermarket chains will begin to abandon NYC. When they leave consumers will have NO choices EXCEPT what the government supplies them in these “free” grocery stores.
We already know how Soviet Grocery stores turned out. Even enough Americans in NYC knew . Madmani got elected with the votes of illegals the Biden regime pumped in.
I don’t believe they’re “free”....just wholesale...In my neck of the woods, we call it the Public Market. And the state will be in the retail business to what end...It costs you and me money...and we get nothing.
What he might do is to get an organization to set up a website so places like churches can order stuff by the truckload at wholesale prices.
Bronx AME Church
1 MLK Way
produce sale at wholesale pricing Sunday after the 11am service
And from what I’ve read, the location they picked for the first has like four or five couple stores to what they will be building around it so it’s not like it’s going to help any underserved population. A failure from the very beginning to actually solve a problem rather make yourself look good.
DC used to have three public markets: Eastern Market and as I recollect from old maps Western Market and Central Market.
NYC still has the Fulton Fish Market I believe.
There used to be a Jeferson Market in the Greenwich Village area as I understand things. I’ve never been in the area so I have no idea if it is still there.
The Turks have set up government food stores in the past.
What problem was it trying to solve? Bet everyone of those folks get SNAP....
“Madmani has a plan. Sounds commie.”
The commies would have people working year-round:
