Hotels in Los Angeles, California are struggling, a new report from industry researchers claimed in a new report.
“Hotels are struggling to keep up with rising operating costs coupled with falling demand,” the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) researchers said last week.
According to AHLA, the city’s minimum wage mandate and other policies led to increased “costs without flexibility to reflect market conditions and demand levels.”
A phased-in minimum wage hike in Los Angeles mandated up to $30 per hour for airport and hotel workers. The law was signed into law last year by Mayor Karen Bass, mandating that their hourly wage must be raised by $2.50 each year until they reach $30 in 2028. […]
The report claimed that the policies led to reduced hiring and cuts in labor hours. Other issues that arose included delayed or canceled hotel investment and development, reduced airline operations and restaurant closures. …

Here’s the problem.
If you own a business that pays $10 maybe $15 an hour you are paying a wage that your employee cant provide their own basic needs. They know you know that. They are probably either doing something illegal or on the dole to subsidize their existence.
It’s an awkward situation for all, including the taxpayer.
The last time I went to LA, I flew into Ontario and stayed in Cucamonga
My friend lives just off the beach in Hermosa Beach not far from LAX. The “teens” have been taking over the Main Street and pier every weekend now. Of course pointing out the demographics of the “teens” would be a racist and the police arresting the “teens” would be even more racist. It use to be a high end safe place as the crazies mostly went to Venice or El Segundo. Now.... Teens are diversifying the neighborhood. It would be easy to stop. Once this happens block the streets. There are only a couple streets to get back to the PCH.
Next up a Los Angeles law to allow illegal immigrants to work in hotels under the $30 an hour minimum wage to save “struggling” business.
That’s not a bug, that’s a feature.
Thank you for the assist.
Why does Bass think $30/hr. is about right? That’s certainly more than she’s worth & she is the Mayor.
Well, the more wages go up, starting with minimum, the more prices will increase; that’s pretty basic. Supposing everyone worked for $1-$2 per hour; prices would have to drop like a shot.
I use to be a houseman in a hotel 30 years ago. We worked four hours per day six days a week cleaning rooms and doing laundry. I was paid $20 per hour along with the house keepers. Hotels don’t need cleaning staff 24 hours per day. If a room needs linen the security guard will deliver it after hours. He was paid $25 per hour. $30 per hour for part time workers is no big deal. I mean hotels are getting paid $100-$200+ in one night fees. Just sayin...
Wages can go up without price increases. It depends on productivity. Historical data does not show a correlation between increases in min wage and inflation. Prosperity does not require leaving the working class in the dust.
