Astronomy Picture of the Day - Hello World
NASA ^ | 4 Oct, 2026 | Image Credit: NASA, Reid Wiseman, Artemis II

Posted on 04/04/2026 11:11:53 AM PDT by MtnClimber

Explanation: From pole to pole our fair planet is captured in this snapshot from space, an evocative image from a window of the Orion spacecraft Integrity. From the spacecraft's perspective the Sun is moving behind Earth's bright limb along the lower right. Africa and the Iberian peninsula are in view on the pale blue planet's surface, while aurorae crown Earth's south and north poles at top right and bottom left. Commander Reid Wiseman took the historic picture on Artemis II mission flight day 2 (April 2), after the completion of the planned translunar injection burn. That burn boosted the spacecraft out of Earth orbit, sending Integrity and crew on a trajectory that will take them around the Moon and back again. That's a journey humans last made over 50 years ago. (Editor's note: Venus is photobombing Wiseman's historic pic. Currently appearing in our western skies after sunset, the inner planet is in the frame below and right of Earth's bright limb, immersed in a faint band of zodiacal light.)

Four Astronuts shot around the Dark Side of the Moon just to take pics through a window?

Amazing. Did they clean up all the space junk and rocket boosters and satellites before they launched?

The total mass of this orbital debris is approximately 13,500 tonnes, comprising roughly 8,000 tonnes of satellites (half of which are non-functional) and 4,000 tonnes of rocket stages.

I know. I don't understand the need for a moon base either. Maybe they just need to spend money or it will be stolen by Somalians.

I saw this beautiful pic yesterday and still am trying to figure out what the tan colored thingy is in the center of the pic. Looks like the ISS?

I hope they don’t mix the Imperial and Metric units, as happened for one lost Mars spacecraft.

The Moon, and eventually Mars, will, also eventually, be paying for themselves many times over.

Or have the test software for an engine burn instead of the real software as happened on the launch of the MILSTAR 3 satellite which left it in an unusable low orbit. I was there for the launch. Talk about a punch in the stomach!

As the saying goes: it takes money to make money. This is where Elon Musk and even Bezos and others will pick up where NASA can’t.

It takes time as well. I doubt a lunar base like what they are envisioning will be ready in 5, or even 10 years. We don’t even know how much water there might be at either lunar pole. But I could certainly be wrong.

I think the spacecraft is upside down. Space is weird that way.

unlike the Apollo 17 photo, which was taken by sunlight, this photo was taken by Moonlight, so that you can see Venus at about 5 o’clock, as a bright star.
