Wine, beer or liquor: Study finds one drink is linked to lower risk of death than others
The New York Post ^ | 03/26/2026 | Andrea Margolis

Not all types of alcohol are created equal — and a new study suggests that wine may carry lower health risks than beer or hard liquor. *** Using UK Biobank data, researchers analyzed participant questionnaires. The adults were placed into one of four groups based on their alcohol consumption levels.

The study was observational — meaning the findings show an association but cannot prove cause and effect. *** Analyzing cardiovascular disease deaths, researchers discovered that moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of dying from the disease than people who never drank or occasionally drank — though, once again, the study was observational in nature only. Experts have urged caution in interpreting such findings. “By contrast, even low intake of spirits, beer or cider was associated with a 9% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with drinking never or occasionally,” the American College of Cardiology’s news release said. *** High alcohol consumption also increased overall health risks.

People with high alcohol intake were 24% more likely to die from any cause. ***

Differences in risk by alcohol type emerged at low and moderate levels of consumption, where drinking spirits, beer or cider was associated with a significantly higher risk of death while the same level of wine consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of death,” the release stated.

I’m two years younger than dirt (83) and am in pretty good shape. (Round’s a shape, right?)

My Dad used to say “Beware of the guy who doesn't drink, smoke or swear. He hiding some really terrible vice”. LOL.

People who are nondrinkers are viewed in a negative way by even people who are only light boozers. In general nondrinkers tend to be ostracized by most people in our society. Usually, it is assumed that they are people who are reformed alcoholics, or feel that they are morally superior.

Bombay Sapphire is great, but an excellent gin for a LOT less money is Members Mark from Sam’s Club. Not kidding. Check the reviews.

I seem to remember that the health benefit is from red wine, and something in the grape skins. They should do a study comparing wine drinkers with those who drink grape juice.

Maybe people who drink only small amounts of wine are also more health conscience in general. They get more exercise. They eat better food. They watch what they eat.

Sounds like it.

“Son, never trust a man who doesn’t drink because he’s probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They’re the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They’re usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they’re a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can’t trust a man who’s afraid of himself.” James Crumley

Better advice would be to never listen to or trust a man who says anything like this. Logical fallacies...only trust people who engage in willfully destructive behavior and are in a drug induced state of mind?

I had to look up Taka, a new one on me! Looks interesting. Can you taste the lemon/lime undertones over the juniper? I might just have to try that! Thanks.

I couldn’t even guess how many years it’s been since I’ve drunk any wine at all. Decades.

Half a century here

Yeah, I mostly drank beer, maybe some rum in cold weather. Now that I’m retired, I can drink any old time I want to, but I almost never want to. Maybe a beer a few times a year.

At the Last Supper, Jesus asked his apostles to drink wine. Was Jesus engaging in “willful destructive” behavior?

Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. 1Timothy 5:23
