Not all types of alcohol are created equal — and a new study suggests that wine may carry lower health risks than beer or hard liquor. *** Using UK Biobank data, researchers analyzed participant questionnaires. The adults were placed into one of four groups based on their alcohol consumption levels.
The study was observational — meaning the findings show an association but cannot prove cause and effect. *** Analyzing cardiovascular disease deaths, researchers discovered that moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of dying from the disease than people who never drank or occasionally drank — though, once again, the study was observational in nature only. Experts have urged caution in interpreting such findings. “By contrast, even low intake of spirits, beer or cider was associated with a 9% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with drinking never or occasionally,” the American College of Cardiology’s news release said. *** High alcohol consumption also increased overall health risks.
People with high alcohol intake were 24% more likely to die from any cause. ***
Differences in risk by alcohol type emerged at low and moderate levels of consumption, where drinking spirits, beer or cider was associated with a significantly higher risk of death while the same level of wine consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of death,” the release stated.

I try to split the difference between wine and spirits by drinking a bit of brandy :)
A doctor taught my Bible Study. He said he never had alcoholic patient who just drank red wine. Almost all were liquor drinkers.
“My doctor has perfect vision”
Night Train? Weak. Thunderbird is the way to go
I’d suggest that wine drinkers tend to have healthier diets and lifestyles, on average, than beer and hard liquor drinkers.
I usually have one drink of Bourbon in the evening. About an ounce and a half >< of Woodfords Reserve or some equivalent mid priced Bourbon. Straight. And while sipping it for about while, I will sometimes puff on a pipe. I don’t inhale the pipe, and prefer low nicotine Latakia blends, or Captain Black Original. I’m 75, no health issues to speak of, and I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’ve taken blood pressure readings several times both before and after this enjoyment, and found that it actually LOWERED my BP? Not by a lot, but I expected it to go up a bit. I suppose the relaxation has something to do with it ?
Doctor: “I want you to stop drinking.”
Patient: “Will I live to be 100?”
Doctor: “No, but it will seem like it..”
The key beneficial ingredients of the Mediterranean Diet are red wine and olive oil. The rest of the ingredients are just along for the ride.
These types of studies are always suspect. There are too many factors to consider. For example, perhaps there is a higher correlation with alcohol and high blood pressure and/or cardiovascular disease because the people that drink the most tend to be more often people with “issues”. A person that had a rough, abusive childhood would be a higher stress person anyway and may be self-medicating with alcohol, but such a person would also be at higher risk for cardiovascular disease as a teetotaler as compared to other teetotalers who don’t have such a background. Rarely do I see any such studies control for these factors, if it is at all possible to control for them all.
Huh. The American College of Cardiology’s a bunch of winos. Prove me wrong.
I rarely see people who drink wine stop at one glass. Very very rarely. I often see wine drinkers have 2 or 3 glasses, and sometimes 4, but it also depends on how much time they have.
Me too. Or whiskey.
Not according to the article:
People with high alcohol intake were 24% more likely to die from any cause.
The corollary being there was a chance of NOT dying from any cause.
(Yeah I know, the study probably tied the statistics to a particular time frame, but the crap article doesn't say that. We could not die forever.)
G+T oh Yes
I get it now...
.
Still I’m buying a Box-o-Wine.
Thanks!
A good comment I saw once:
People keep telling me I will live longer if I don’t drink, and I always say, “Doing what?”.
“Weed,Whites and Wine
then just show Me a Sign
and I’ll be a willin’
To be A Rollin’”
.
Just say NO.
I went through a Gin and Tonic phase every night for about 3 years. Then I started adding more variety. However, sometimes nothing but a Gin and Tonic will do in the summer.
You’ll laugh, but I drink Taka gin. Gordons is good, too, and is produced by Tanqueray. I’ve tried gins costing over $100 per bottle but, when you’re mixing it with tonic anyway, almost any gin is good enough.
