Wine, beer or liquor: Study finds one drink is linked to lower risk of death than others

Not all types of alcohol are created equal — and a new study suggests that wine may carry lower health risks than beer or hard liquor. *** Using UK Biobank data, researchers analyzed participant questionnaires. The adults were placed into one of four groups based on their alcohol consumption levels.

The study was observational — meaning the findings show an association but cannot prove cause and effect. *** Analyzing cardiovascular disease deaths, researchers discovered that moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of dying from the disease than people who never drank or occasionally drank — though, once again, the study was observational in nature only. Experts have urged caution in interpreting such findings. “By contrast, even low intake of spirits, beer or cider was associated with a 9% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with drinking never or occasionally,” the American College of Cardiology’s news release said. *** High alcohol consumption also increased overall health risks.

People with high alcohol intake were 24% more likely to die from any cause. ***

Differences in risk by alcohol type emerged at low and moderate levels of consumption, where drinking spirits, beer or cider was associated with a significantly higher risk of death while the same level of wine consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of death,” the release stated.

Alcohol is good. Alcohol is bad. Two drinks a day. “Don’t have it for breakfast.”

One thing is certain: those who drink and those who don’t will both eventually end up in the ground.

The results are interesting in that wine is generally higher alcohol content than beer; so maybe beer drinkers drink more beer in one setting while wine drinkers drink one glass mostly???

Every night around 5PM for almost 50 years I’ve had one G&T. In all those years, I’ve not had malaria once!

The problem with these studies is they do not account for other factors.

Basically, it says that drinking a glass of wine is good for you. While drinking straight alcohol, beer or cider is not.

Does it also account for the BMI of the beer or cider or spirits drinkers?

Maybe people who drink only small amounts of wine are also more health conscience in general. They get more exercise. They eat better food. They watch what they eat.

All excessive alcohol consumption is generally bad for you.
I personally also find it leads to eating bad food or over eating. Meaning, if you are hung over you tend to eat crap food to make your stomach feel better.
Typically the ONLY cure is to have another drink. So, it becomes a spiral trap/addiction.

It’s the bioflavonoids. Cacao can do much of the same thing for your heart health. Probably other foods as well that I’m not aware of.

Ah yes, Mad Dog 20/20. I was actually a Boone’s Farm guy during my cheap-wine days at 16 or 17. I couldn’t even guess how many years it’s been since I’ve drunk any wine at all. Decades.

My Dad used to say “Beware of the guy who doesn’t drink, smoke or swear. He hiding some really terrible vice”. LOL.

“Son, never trust a man who doesn’t drink because he’s probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They’re the judges, the meddlers.

And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They’re usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they’re a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can’t trust a man who’s afraid of himself.” James Crumley
