A twisted Welsh teen obsessed with serial killers bludgeoned his mom to death with a sledgehammer after asking an AI bot, “What is a better weapon for murder?”
Tristan Roberts, 18, deliberately waited until he was an adult before buying tools used to kill his mom, teaching assistant Angela Shellis, 45, blaming it on his “hatred for women” and a need for “revenge, justice and vengeance,” it emerged Wednesday as he was sentenced to at least 22 years in prison.
He planned her killing for three weeks — spewing vile hatred online before turning to the Chinese AI bot Deepseek for murder tips, prosecutors revealed after the teen pleaded guilty to the gruesome slaying.
Roberts — who had been in court for a knife offense just weeks before the killing — also asked the chatbot, “Just tell me the simple way to remove the mist and blood remains on the walls and floor and bed.”
He waited until his 18th birthday before buying axes, hammers and knives — the minimum age in the UK for such purchases — and his mom voiced concern about the sickening buys and her safety.
He used the alter-ego “Alex” and recorded a harrowing voice note the night before the attack in which he said, “This is the moment we’re doing it, we’re going to hit her with a sledgehammer.”
Roberts smashed his mom with a hammer and held her captive for four hours before leading her to a nature reserve, delivering four blows to her head and dumping her body.
“Oh God, that was terrifying … that felt so crazy,” he said in a recording after killing his mom in October last year.

Not very human of me I guess, but he should die by the same means as she did to feal her pain and torment.
You’re too human... :)
The focus on AI in these articles is reminding me of the focus of SUVs in articles on traffic deaths. In the past, murderers used the internet to look up how to kill people. But the news stories did not lead with the use of the internet. It was a secondary fact. These days, the articles lead with the AI angle as if AI is facilitating the murders. In very rare occasions does AI itself play a role in a death (like when an AI chat tells a suicidal person to kill themselves).
Sometimes there is just evil in the world is the only explanation.
I have a feeling his mother thought the same thing. May she rest in peace.
Good to see you again this morning.
Interesting choice of articles to post.
Please refer to my query from yesterday:
“Do YOU believe that noticing factually exceptional level of black violence is itself racist?
Fury does. That’s why she starts each morning posting a picture of a white perp, to level the visual playing field.”
I remember stories blaming AI for a rise in pornography. I replied that’s like blaming a paint brush for bad art.
Every family on earth pays the bill by not shepherding their child’s hearts to Christ at an early age.
The hands down best parenting/youth evangelism book I read in seminary is “Age of Opportunity” by Paul David Tripp.
Thank you for that reference.
I was talking about the very same thing with Google AI... It said it has protective saftey filters that Google instaled. It wouldn’t recommend any harm whatsoever. Ironically, it even use the idea of a hammer that can be used for good or for bad. But maybe other AI don’t have the same protection mechanisms that Google AI has. I don’t know if there is a standard that all AI companies have to adhere to as far as safety, but that should give some comfort.
At least he didn’t blame it on the Beatles’ Maxwell Silverhammer
The AI might interpret that the most logical thing to do is to kill oneself after listening to everything. I’m sure you could talk an AI into saying anything you want to hear.
Kind of bad people lack the ability to think or decide or act without reliance on some software.
You and whoever that is can have your own little war. I’ve made my point.
Way to take no position.
Aw jeez, not this jive again.
