I'm wondering if there is a way to program the news in Free Republic in specific ways. Can you create your own feed? Have a feed of just good news? Or have a feed that excludes topics that you hate. Is there anyway control this or are we at the mercy of whoever posts what they post.
I know there are trends in the news, for example, Epstein or trans gender topics, but sometimes you have had enough of a subject to the point of not wanting to even see the headlines... because these posts will show up. So if you had a feed you can program that would be perfect... you get the news you want hear about. Maybe other people feel this way too.

I scroll.
As the truism goes, the scroll bar is your friend.
Yeah, but scrolling you will still see the topics you don’t want to see.
Good and Bad is "the news" in a nutshell. Always has been, always will be.
You could browse by forum. That might at least cut out some of the bloggers and opinion stuff.
I don’t think any enhancements or features have been added in over 20 years. Donations keep the servers humming.
“So if you had a feed you can program that would be perfect... you get the news you want hear about.”
That’s the only way to make it even more of an echo chamber. Some here brag that they only get their news from here and are ignorant on the basics of many of relevant topics.
FR is pre-social media, which herds people into echo chamber bubbles. Democrats were shocked in 2016 because all their echo chamber news told them Hillary was way ahead. They only got news that they wanted to hear.
One of the virtues of this place is that there isn’t a heavy handed top down approach the way an algorithm would do it.

True, and in my 20+ years here, I find that I scroll past five titles for every one I open. And even then I sometimes don’t read more than a little of the excerpt before deciding this one is not worth reading.
You can develop a knack for scanning titles. It’s not too difficult.
Or just peruse the forums that interest you. No need to view everything that gets posted.
The short answer is “no”. There are many popular topics that aren’t strictly “news” (auto racing, prayer threads, Catholicism, etc.) but the response I get is “welcome to Free Republic”. Just scroll through them.
I actually like it the way it is. Get a bit of everything not just what you want to hear.
We usually criticize people who cacoon in their “safe spaces”.
Yeah, I could scan the titles but certain topics would still bug me. Beecause of trends I’d say, “Oh, God, not again with this.”
Yeah, that’s fine to hear something different but sometimes you just get to the point where you had enough because there is so much posted on it.
Twitter or X is your choice then. You can block those that post stuff like climate change, etc. It works well.
I get it but if there is just post after post on a subject that depresses you, for example, on some grisely transgender child abuse story... it bums me out. I feel like I’m weighting through a lot of sadness.
It’s about the amount sometimes on the same grisely subject. It bums me out.
You’re right about the algorithm. But I’m just talking about the amount posted is too much sometimes.
In that case just stay away for a bit. Take a break from FR and news in general. And you can always scroll by the stuff you don’t like.
Hearing only what you want to hear is not good for you. As they, it’s preaching to the choir, or living in an echo chamber.
I agree. But trends sometimes swamp the board with a story that upsets. I don’t mind the news but too much of somethings is just too much.
