The neocons are now proposing that we can defeat Iran with air power alone. A few Bunker Busters and it will be all wrapped up. Air power alone will bring victory.
This has never happened before, so let’s just say that despite their optimistic forecast, we do ultimately have to put “boots on the ground” to force a final Iranian defeat.
Time for a brief comparative geography lesson related to just how many boots might be needed, if Iran doesn’t surrender after we shock and awe them with our air power.

Iran is in a different category than Nazi Germany because there is evidently a large rebel sentiment within Iran. Nevertheless, your point is a good one.
There’s got be lots and lots of well-armed regime loyalists under shelter, just waiting for the bombs to stop falling. And the bombs will eventually stop falling.

You can’t force a final defeat if the snake head just regrows coming from another snake pit. As long as their are islamists, that head is just a country away. The only way to stop the migration of snakes is to get rid of the desert, in this case. You have to make the area so bad for them that they won’t come in. And you have to have a group of dwellers that won’t let them in, at all. And even the US doesn’t do that. And when the liberals get back in power some day, it will be like Bugs Bunny saying, “Run for the hills, or you’ll be up to your armpits in martians.” Just have to change the last word of the sentence.

The only way that will happen is like it happened in Japan, with the use of nuclear weapons. That will require a declaration of war by Congress... in a mid-term election year.

Defeating Iran with air power is possible if you define victory as eliminating weapons, inventories, and the infrastructure needed to create them.

That requires them to want to. The Christian God doesn’t promise them virgins. And everlasting peace and tranquility is beyond their ability to comprehend. Just tell them to stay out. And if they don’t, shoot them. Nobody said the new regime is required to be peaceful...just non-islamist. That’s the first step.

True with the last war but drones have already changed that fabric of war in Ukraine. The boots on the ground could be the Iranian people themselves with air support.

Missiles and drones. And now Hezbollah is back and launching rockets consistently and coordinated with every Iranian missile and drone wave.
This is the same Hezbollah they told that was completely destroyed and defeated and disarmed only months ago.
