‘Armageddon’ attack on Qatari plant could keep energy prices high around the world: analysts

Damage to a critical Qatari facility is threatening to keep energy prices high around the world even if the war in Iran ends soon in what some analysts are calling an “Armageddon” situation.

Qatar’s Las Raffan plant supplies a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas, which is used for electricity, heating and cooking – but Iranian strikes have damaged the facility, worsening what is already the largest-ever energy supply disruption.

“I woke up this morning and thought, ‘No, please no,’” Anne-Sophie Corbeau, former head of gas analysis at BP now at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy, told the Financial Times.

“This has always been my nightmare scenario, my Armageddon scenario, the one I didn’t want to happen.”

Gas prices in Europe spiked 30% as markets reopened, having more than doubled since the start of the war, while some gas stations in Asia have already imposed fuel rations to combat shortages.

“It is apocalypse now. The coming months for gas importers are going to be a bloodbath,” Laurent Segalen, a clean energy investment banker, told the FT.

Europe and Asia will bear the brunt of the new supply disruption, but it will eventually ripple across the globe – likely hitting the US in about two months, according to Joe Adamski, managing director of ProcureAbility, a supply chain consultancy.

Is the technology and manpower to fix something damaged gone?

The will is obviously there. Qatar likes making money from selling LNG.

And it's going to take five years to put out those hundreds of wellhead fires set in Kuwait by Saddam's thugs. Oh, and the smoke is going to cause drought and famine in India.

The technology, the ready cash to cover costs, and the will are all certainly there. There is still a time factor, even on a crash priority, and a continuing probability that the Iranian leadership of the IRGC, already crazier than bat guano, will revisit the site with as much firepower as they can muster.

Said firepower is already vastly diminished. but the bat-guano craziness has not decreased one whit.

A (by her own admission) “woke” (lol) BP analyst? From the company that swore off fossil fuels a few years ago and loudly announced that they were moving towards renewables? THAT BP?

Oh the huge manatee! ROFL. I shall remain calm in my soul for now.

Ok. It is 25% of production. Is there a way to invest and expand the output of the other 75%. One man’s disaster may prove to be another man’s opportunity?

WV is full of natural gas. I see it headed to the Norfolk shipyards every day.

They come from the line of Ishmael - and God declared,:

“He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”

Iran is a rabid animal that needs to be put down because it has one purpose - to destroy all that is good for Mankind.

Yep - they reached $30/Barrel more under Biden - at the same time that food prices were skyrocketing...and Biden helped give Iran the sense of security that it could continue and expand its activities - once they are vanquished, life will get really good again...

Then we need to produce more oil at home FOR home.

And looks like good motivation for more tree harvesting for firewood. It’s cheaper to heat that way than oil and it’s great exercise getting out in the woods and taking down trees and cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood.

Iranians don’t come from the line of Ishmael. They are descendants of Shem’s son Elam, not Abraham / Ishmael.

I believe the rest of the folks left in their original terror state government know they have lost and are now bent on destroying as much of the world as they can before scooting off to their 72 virgins.

There are currently 34 million barrels of crude oil stored on Kharg Island. We are not sending marines there to picnic. I suspect we will be seizing the island and putting the supply on the market while withholding the sales proceeds from the regime. Works for me

You are one of the very few I've seen who gets it about that verse, but there's a lot more to it. First, a wild African ass is a destructive, promiscuous, and useless beast who tears up the range (see "desert"). His "hand" is the same Hebrew root as for a phallus. The next verse has Ishmael's features in every face and dwelling in their tents (screwing their women).

And so it is from the Middle East, to Spain, to Latin America, and east to Indonesia. But...

Iran is not a Semitic people. The Arabs within it are. And what do you know but that it is the Arab contingent rampant within the IRGC and among the mullahs.

On the bright side anything that lessens money flowing to Islamic states is a good thing in the long run. Islam was all but beaten until all that oil money breathed new life into it again. The amusing thing is that an Islamic state totally devoted to absolute conquest is the one doing the attack!
