he USS Gerald Ford is headed for service repairs in Crete days after experiencing an hourslong fire while deployed in the Red Sea for service in the Iran war.

The aircraft carrier will spend over a week in port at the Naval Support Activity Souda Bay for repairs, according to the U.S. Naval Institute. Mutiny? Drone attack? Sailor incompetence? Disgruntled sailor?

We will never know.

A 30-hour fire sounds like lithium batteries.

I read somewhere that the fire got into ductwork and was able to spread substantially, which might explain the duration as well.

The George H.W. Bush is nearing the Spanish Coast to relieve the Gerald R. Ford. This was planned long before the fire that has been reported as it needed some essential repairs anyway. But ignorant people will display their reports to suit their own biases.

This old Army guy knows nothing about the Navy but IIRC the Ford is the most advanced carrier we have.

The USS Gerald Ford seems to have had problems from its very beginning. Lives up to its name Ford: Fix Or Repair Daily

Ford? More like BMW. High maintenance as well as a high price tag.

I was thinking the same thing. Some Islamic guy who wanted to sabotage the mission. Mad Moe Mafia member Nidal Hasan, a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured more than 30 others on November 5, 2009. The POS is STILL waiting for his execution!

They're going to have cretins repair it?

There is a reason why all Navy ships have designated fire fighting parties and regular drills. It happens. Ships are big, complicated platforms. Nothing’s perfect.

Being deployed too long, with deferred maintenance?

Or we suffered a hit and are covering it up.

“As of March 18, 2026, the Ford is withdrawing from the Red Sea after suffering a fire in its laundry area that injured sailors and damaged over 100 berths. It is now heading to Souda Bay, Crete, for repairs, taking it out of active operations. The USS George H.W. Bush is preparing to relieve it in the Middle East.”

“The USS Gerald R. Ford has been on station for nearly 10 months as of mid-March 2026, with its deployment expected to extend into May 2026, potentially reaching 11 months at sea. This would surpass the post-Vietnam War record of 294 days set by the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Extended Deployment Timeline:
The carrier departed Norfolk on June 24, 2025, and was initially expected to complete a standard 6- to 8-month deployment. However, due to heightened tensions and ongoing military operations involving Iran, its mission was extended twice. “

I was a MM3 worked in AC&R shop HVAC and cleaner of the air filters. I was also on the fire department full time for a total of 9 months went from being an OBA Investigator to One on One. I saw what a storeroom fire could do in the way of heat transfer deck to deck bulkhead to bulkhead before on my ship. My guess is they had a flash fire in laundry {Lint} and it went from there. It likely didn’t take 30 hours unless you count reflash watch time. Even at circle William or William the ducts can still burn dust. It sounds like they were very lucky.

When the war started, I heard a carrier was hit by something and had a fire.

In today’s world of information control it’s hard to tell.

Covid, Ukraine, the Russian hoax, insurrection stories all reaked of manipulation to sway public opinion.

I wish we still had a real media (as in 1970 where you had >200 various “independent” papers) AND reporters that actually go out and research, investigate, are on the ground.

A media that isn’t just controlled by a handful of giants, 6 major media conglomerates in the legacy MSM, and maybe 3 names in social media which really control the “news,” if you want to call it that. Where your reporters are no more than a mouthpiece, concentrated in places like DC and simply put out a story with a black, women, gay, Latino, asian, or white older man’s face (America is all about identity politics) all saying the same crap: https://youtu.be/_fHfgU8oMSo?si=8e4OS3j17jCvrN9F

I’m pro Trump and military. I think he’s the best thing since sliced bread, but would he and the DOW use the tools to their disposal (primarily through access) to influence the the narrative? Probably.

I would hope so. Need to do what is necessary to combat the leftists running the media.
